The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "The Last Dance" Season 2, Episode 18

On this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries, the group attends a '60s decade dance, only to have their fun ruined by Klaus, who's taken over Alaric's body. And let's just say Matt Davis plays an excellent creepy baddie. Who won the war, at least this week, between the Original and our friends in Mystic Falls? Let's find out.

Klaus, in the form of Alaric, (we'll call him Klaric) talks to Katherine and finds out the dagger is in Elijah's body, which is in the Salvatores' basement. He seems keen on this fact knowing it'll keep Elijah away. Katherine is actually terrified by his touch and asks him to kill her once and for all. But she won't get off so easy. "I've searched for you for over 500 years — your death is going to last at least half that," he tells her. Klaric then compels Kat to stab herself over and over again.

Matt goes to see Sheriff Forbes because with his new knowledge of vampires, he doesn't know what to do or how to act. The Sheriff knows her daughter isn't the only vamp in town and tells Matt, "I just need to take a beat and figure out what to do." Would she turn against her own daughter? At least at school, Matt acts pretty normal by laying a big kiss on his girl.

At school, Dana walks up to Elena and tells her a hot guy wants to know if she'll be at the dance...and his name is Klaus. Elena realizes she's compelled and that Klaus is one step closer to her. Little does she know he's infiltrated their inner circle.

It's disco time as everyone heads to the school for the dance. Jeremy is on edge knowing Bonnie plans to use her powers on Klaus, but that doing so could easily kill her. Klaus, meanwhile, is riding high after his buddy Maddox put a spell on him to be protected in Alaric's "haggard history teacher" body.

Before getting to the drama, we're treated to some awesome dance sequences. Matt and Caroline are cute as ever, while Damon proves to Elena he's got moves she's never seen before. Even Klaric shimmies his way through the dance floor.

Damon overhears Jeremy and Bonnie's discussion and learns about the powers she kept secret. Meanwhile, Jeremy goes to Stefan with his dilemma that could save his sister but kill his girlfriend. Stefan fills Elena in and she pleads with Bonnie not to sacrifice herself. "If the situation was reversed would you do it for me?" Bonnie asks her. Of course the answer is yes, but Elena still tells not to do it.

Jeremy faces some guys in the hallway that were compelled by Klaus. While he's getting attacked, Klaric warns Bonnie and Elena to come with him because Klaus has Jeremy. Soon they realize something is up with the so-called Mr. Saltzman. After Bonnie proves her power is no joke, she and Elena run. But Bonnie goes back to face off with Klaric. Stefan and Elena run to stop her as Damon says that they need to let her do what she needs to do. Bonnie shuts the door and now nobody can stop her from using the powers. After lots of commotion and bleeding from Bonnie's nose, she drops to the ground. Elena is in hysterics at the sight of her lifeless best friend and Damon shows up to say he'll take care of the body. Heartbreaking scene from Elena. Even worse is when Jeremy runs up to Damon and he says, "We need to have a little talk."

Back at the house, Elena is distraught. Damon shows up and Elena slaps him. But then he says, "You need to listen to me and prepare for what I'm about to say." As we see Jeremy sits next to Bonnie's body, Damon's voiceover says, "Bonnie had to die ... He wasn't going to stop and we weren't going to be able to stop him until he knew she was dead." Then he we see Bonnie's eyes open and Jeremy embrace her. It was a spell and she's alive — although she has to stay hidden in the cave for the time being. But at least her and Elena can skype.

Damon gives Stefan a sarcastic thank you for spilling to your girlfriend about Bonnie's powers and reminds him that he's fine being the bad guy with the good strategy. "At the end of the day, I'll be the one to keep her alive," Damon says. He then chats with Elena who says, "Let's get something straight, Bonnie will not die for me... We'll find another way." She apologizes for hitting him and then he says, "Let me be clear about something. If it comes down to you and the witch again, I will gladly let Bonnie die. I will always choose you." Swoon, Delena fans!

In the final scene, Elena shows she's calling the shots. She goes down to Elijah's body and pulls out the dagger. I guess that's her "other way" to kill Klaus, only Elijah will now come back to life.
