This week's episode of The Vampire Diaries was probably the most epic of the season. Damon and his new girlfriend Andie arrange a dinner party for Elijah so that they can kill him during dessert, while Stefan confesses to Elena that he used to be a rabid murderer. So was the plot successful? Keep reading to find out.
Elena can't get enough of the Gilbert family journals, which provide us with our first flashback of the night. Jonathan Gilbert goes outside with the tracking device that soon wigs out. Like that two people are dead and the killer vampire reveals himself to be Stefan. Then he takes a bite into Jonathan.
In present day, Damon calls up his brother to let him know about the plan — and dagger-- to kill Elijah. Stefan is still at the lake house and upset over learning that Elena has agreed to sacrifice herself. She continues to read the journal entries and points to the page that names Stefan as a bloody killer. "He described you as a monster," she says. "I was," he responds. Stefan tells Elena his version of the story about how he loved the days following his turn. He killed one person after the next while his brother Damon chided him for being too careless in a town hunting down their kind. "It sounds like you were Damon," Elena says. "I was worse," Stefan answers.
After Andie suggests a dinner party for the group, Damon goes to check on Katherine and see if he can find out how to kill Elijah. Damon gets confirmation that the dagger and white oak ash will do the trick, but Katherine pleads that if Elijah is dead, she'll be banished to the tomb forever.
Back at the Salvatores, John shows up to dinner. Next, Elijah arrives and warns Damon that if he has anything dishonorable planned, he's better not go through with it.
Meanwhile, in a side story, Bonnie shows up to Jeremy's, where he's laid out candles in the living room. She soon realizes it's a date and explains that they can't "hang" until they tell Elena. The two are so adorable, especially when Jeremy makes sure that she enjoyed the kiss, which, of course, she did.
As Elena continues to read, she finds the passage about the dagger. Turns out if Damon were to use it, it would kill both him and Elijah. Stefan quickly gets on the phone with Alaric, who stops Damon from stabbing Elijah. It's also revealed that John, who knew the plan the whole time, also knew that Damon would end up getting himself killed. David Anders, why did you say we can trust you? But then out of nowhere, Alaric steps up to the plate and sticks the dagger right into Elijah. "You better get rid of him before Jenna comes back with dessert," he says.
During another flashback, we see how Stefan and Lexie first met. She was the one who helped Stefan become good, by explaining there was another way to live as a vampire.
Just as we thought Elijah was dead, Elena reads to Stefan that because originals believed in truth and honor, the dagger would take both lives -- as long as the dagger stays in place. Too late. The dagger had been removed from Elijah and as Damon runs to check on him, he's already gone. His first stop is Jonah's, where he claims they must find Elena. Jonah immediately goes to find Bonnie, and questions what she found out from his son Luka. She admits that she knows about Klaus having his daughter. He then threatens her and takes away her powers.
Elijah shows up to the lake house, but cannot get in without an invite. He tells Elena she has nothing left to negotiate, but she throws back at him that she'd love to see him try to lure Klaus back after she kills herself. "You're going to have to call your bluff," he says, so she stabs herself right in the stomach. As Elijah runs after her, she makes him give her his word. And then she stabs him back with the dagger and successfully kills the original. Damon appears and says, "Little tip, don't pull the dagger out."
Back at the Gilbert house, Jenna confronts Alaric about what really happened to Isobel. "Are you being honest?" she asks with tears in her eyes. He says nothing, which is enough of an answer. After she walks away, John appears. Alaric hands over the ring. "After what you did to Damon, you're going to need it more than me," he says.
Up at the lake house, Elena tells the brothers that they can no longer keeps things from her and they're going to do things her way. She leaves and Stefan tells Damon that he told her about Lexie keeping him going, just as he's now making Elena fight to live. We're treated to one final flashback with Lexie explaining to Damon that the hate he has will get the best of him. He leaves town and Lexie says she's going to help Stefan.
In the final scene, Damon hears his shower, but it's not Andie, it's Katherine. Turns out she knew if she begged Damon not to kill Elijah, he'd do the opposite. "Little known fact, as soon as [originals] die, compulsion wears off," she says, now free from the tomb. But she claims that she didn't run away and that she really is going to help him. Do you believe her?
