The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "Daddy Issues" Season 2, Episode 13

On this week's Vampire Diaries, Elena is shocked to learn that Uncle John (aka her biological father) has returned to Mystic Falls. Meanwhile, Caroline is taken hostage as Tyler deals with the news that she and her fellow vamps may have killed Mason.

Caroline and Tyler are clearly at odds this week. Not only did he learn that there are other vampires in town, but that they were responsible for his Uncle Mason's death. "I trusted you," he says, after throwing her against the car.

After the first of Damon's shower scenes(!), he confronts Stefan about bringing Uncle John back to town. Stefan claims that John says he knows how to keep Elena safe, and then adds that he's sorry about Rose's death. "Whatever, I knew her about five minutes," Damon shrugs, before joking that he's now evolving and might even decide to get a hero hairdo of his own to steal Stefan's thunder. Ha!

While Stefan is talking to Tyler, across town Jules has found Brady, a fellow werewolf she's also romantically involved with. They immediately find Caroline and take her hostage. It's painful watching Brady torture our girl. Stefan eventually shows up with Tyler and wants to trade the werewolf for the vamp. But once Damon shows up, matters get complicated as Brady calls on his other friends to start attacking them. While everyone is fighting outside, Tyler runs inside and sees Caroline locked up. He hesitates before letting her out, enough to make Caroline realize he might be flipping sides. Just as Damon is about to get stabbed, everyone drops in pain because of a noise. It's Jonas, who says he's making sure Elijah's promise is upheld. "When your friends awaken, give them a message," he tells Tyler. "They need to get the hell out of this town."

With Caroline safe at home, Tyler shows up to talk to her, but she's not having it. She explains that she only lied about Mason's death to protect her friends and him, and although Tyler says he didn't know what to do, Caroline yells that they'll never be friends again.

Back at the Gilbert house, Uncle John gives Elena a necklace that was her mom's. He somewhat makes a peace offering by saying that he's going to do everything he can to protect her and the family. Of course, Elena doesn't trust him.

Tyler goes to see Jules and Brady and apologizes for what happened to their friends. "It's not always like this, is it?" he asks. Brady wonders why Mason was stupid enough to stay in Mystic Falls and Tyler lets it slip that it was because of the moonstone. But he also says he doesn't know where it is, which only leaves Jules and Brady pondering this new information.

As for Damon's second nude scene (which Somerhalder filmed on his birthday), he's in the bathtub with Andie Starr, "Miss Sexy Reporter Girl," as he calls her. He tells her about a problem he has messing with his mind, that's he in love with a woman he can never have. He tells her he's bad and that he likes to kill. But just as she becomes frightened, he compels her to not be afraid. "She wants me to be the better man, which means I can't be who I am," he says. It's heartbreaking, but also wonderful to see Damon in this state. "Love does that, Damon; it changes us," Andie says. Of course, this leads to kissing, which leads to Damon feeding on her. It's kind of gross to watch as the blood runs down her back and mixes with the bubbles in the tub.

In the final scene, Uncle John visits Katherine in the tomb. She had hoped for Isobel, but he says he's there on her behalf.  "I want out of this tomb, John," she says. "I'm already on it," he responds.

Are the two working together?
