The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "The Descent" Season 2, Episode 12

The Vampire Diaries is finally back after a (way too long!) winter hiatus. So what happened in "The Descent?" Let's get to recapping!

Jules awakes in the woods surrounded by body parts. As she's trying to clean up the scene and make a quick getaway, a cop car rolls up. She turns on the tears and tells the cop that her friends were attacked, but the moment he turns his head she grabs a hunk of wood to knock him dead.

As Rose is preparing for her impending death, she remarks to Damon that she was born in 1450 and has lived a long life. Damon doesn't want to accept that she's dying, and gives her a little wolf's blood to try to help her heal. But one look at her back and he knows that's not the case. Later, Rose talks to Elena and tries to persuade her not to take the deal with Elijah. "You really are determined to die, aren't you? At least I ran, you're not even trying," she says. Rose then gets loopy and starts wincing and choking and soon she's attacking Elena, thinking she's Katherine. Luckily, she snaps out of it and Elena helps her back into bed.

At school, Caroline tells Tyler how great he was for making it through the full moon, but also lets it slip that, according to legend, one bite of his could kill her. The triangle deepens as Matt comes up, Tyler walks away, and Matt proceeds to kiss Caroline. She certainly enjoys it until she remembers the consequences of dating a human, and flees. Later, Matt asks Caroline why she ran away. She tells him she loves him and then cries. He wonders what she's keeping from him. Oh, if he only knew.

Elena returns to Damon's bedroom and Rose is gone. Elena finds her in the basement drinking all the stored blood in the house. She again runs after Elena thinking it's Katherine and Elena only saves herself by shining a light and then digging into her wounds. Soon Elena realizes that Rose has escaped, and it's not long before she goes on a feeding rampage. Damon eventually finds her, as Rose cries when she realizes the destruction she's caused. Rose asks Elena why she's been so nice to her and she says it's because she's human. "I'll never forget it, what it's like to be human ... it's the only thing that's kept me going," Rose says.

When Caroline gets home, Tyler is waiting on her porch. He says he doesn't understand why she would risk her life to help him through his transformation. She starts yelling that she doesn't understand why he can't let someone help him and then he kisses her. And she kisses him back. "Everyone just stop kissing me!" she says before going inside.

As Rose drifts to sleep we see a flashback to the 1400s when she was human. Damon is sitting there as the two bask in the sun in her dream. As she says the pain is gone and she's no long afraid to die, Damon painfully stabs a fork into her heart so she can finally let go. Tears well up as we see a side to Damon Salvatore that we've never seen before.

Jules confronts Tyler at Mystic Grill and says she knows that he's a werewolf and Caroline's a vampire. She then realizes he's a newbie and fills him in on the fact that Mason is dead, and that Caroline and Co. were responsible. Poor innocent Tyler thought Caroline was the only vamp in town, but soon learns they're crawling with them. "Who are you?" he asks. "I'm your friend," she says. "There are others like us and they're on their way."

Damon returns home and Elena bombards him with questions about how he's feeling. He goes back to his old heartless ways, but Elena can see through it. "I feel Elena, and it sucks," he finally admits. He also feels guilty because Jules was coming after him, but instead Rose was killed. She then hugs him as he's clearly struggling with all of his emotions.

At the Gilbert's, Stefan tells Elena he called Isobel. As she asks if he found her, Uncle John appears. He's baaack.

In the final scene, a woman comes across a man laying in the middle of the road, and that man is Damon — a very drunk Damon. "I can't be what other people want me to be, what she wants me to be, this is who I am," he cries. "I'm not human, and I miss it more than anything in the world. That is my secret," he yells before killing the innocent girl.

What did you think of the episode? Were you happy to see a shirtless Stefan so early on? Did you like the nurturing side of Damon showing? Who should Caroline choose? Weigh in below!
