The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "Masquerade" Season 2, Episode 7

On this week's episode, the Lockwoods throw a masquerade ball and the Salvatore brothers do their best to prevent Katherine from wrecking it.

The episode begins with Caroline telling the boys that she saw Katherine and was told to pass along a message: Deliver the moonstone at the masquerade party. "Can't we just give her the moonstone so she'll leave?" Caroline asks the Salvatore brothers. "Katherine's not getting d---," Damon responds. (Who knew CW could use that word?)

Katherine is back at Miss Flowers' (anyone get the reference from the book?) and an old friend shows up. Looks like Katherine also has a witch friend. Kat fills her in on the night's plan.

Bonnie gets to the Salvatores' to see everyone going all Fantastic Four with their weapons of choice. Alaric enjoys his shooting stakes way too much, I must say. The gang, Bonnie included, decide they're going to go ahead with Plan Kill Katherine.

At the masquerade, Katherine, pretending to be Elena, compels Matt again to get Tyler drunk enough to kill him. She then finds Stefan and makes it clear she wants him to bring her the moonstone. When Stefan doesn't oblige, Kat kills an innocent girl to get her point across. Stefan hesitates to go through with the plan, but Damon convinces him they must proceed. After Jeremy delivers a message to Katherine, that Damon and Stefan are ready to hand over the moonstone, she immediately finds Caroline and tries to get her to tell her what they're really planning. Caroline, while being choked, admits that they wanted to kill her and points her in the direction of a room. Caroline is shocked when it's revealed that she actually tricked Katherine and the whole plan was to get her in this room in the first place. Why? Because Bonnie put a spell on it so that Kat can't get out.

Meanwhile, Matt is succeeding in getting drunk with Tyler. He starts provoking him like he's supposed to, pouring alcohol on the floor and smashing a picture of Tyler's dead father. Matt throws a punch and while the two scuffle, Caroline shows up to stop them. She knocks Matt out to stop him from fighting, but all of a sudden one of the girls they were drinking with says, "Matt failed." Katherine always has a backup plan. The girl stabs Tyler's arm and in defense he pushes her to the ground. His full force is enough to kill her when she slams her head on the hard floor. The curse is released and Tyler knows what's about to happen as Caroline witnesses him begin to turn into a werewolf.

As Damon and Stefan begin torturing and stabbing Katherine, outside Elena yells in pain. Every wound Katherine has inflicted on her, Elena feels and bleeds. Jeremy runs in to stop them just as they're about the put the final stake in her heart. "You think you two are the only ones with a witch on your side? Something tells me my witch is better," Katherine says.

Inside, Bonnie goes to find her fellow witch. The witch, named Lucy, admits that Katherine saved her life, so she's now indebted to her. She then touches Bonnie and realizes that Bonnie is the one with the moonstone. "You trust me, don't you?" Lucy says. She then walks in and hands over the moonstone to Katherine. But just when you think Lucy is about to betray Bonnie, suddenly Kat falls to the ground in pain. It turns out, Lucy came to their aid and stopped the spell linking Katherine's pain to Elena.

Later, Bonnie and Lucy learn that they are related. Bonnie wants to ask her so many questions, but Lucy simply tells her that being in the middle of the vampires and humans is exactly where she needs to be. As Lucy walks away, Jeremy approaches a sad Bonnie and offers her a ride home. "When did you get your driver's license?" she asks him. "I'm not a kid anymore, Bonnie," he responds. Anyone else think these two are the next Mystic Falls pairing?

Stefan finds Elena, but is devastated when he realizes that Katherine being gone doesn't mean they can get back together. She explains that she still needs to feel safe. Stefan says he understands, but does he?

Down in a tomb, Katherine wakes up and realizes that she's trapped. Damon says that death would've been too kind; instead, she's going to rot in there. He closes the door to the tomb, where she should've been all along.

In the final scene of the episode, Elena walks to her car as she chats on the phone. She hangs up and there's a crazy person in a mask who comes up behind her and grabs her. What was that she was saying about feeling safe?
