The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "Kill or Be Killed" Season 2, Episode 5

On this week's Vampire Diaries, one person's secret was found out, another's past explained, and another twist revealed.

The episode opens in a flashback outside a bar with some dude picking a fight with Mason Lockwood. Naturally, Mason gets a little too angry and ends up killing the guy. His eyes are all yellow and it seems the curse has been triggered. In the present, Mason is explaining to his nephew Tyler how any death on his hands will trigger the curse.

Stefan and Elena have to continue to fake-fight in order to keep Katherine at bay. The lovebirds can't bear it, so they make up code words that really mean "I love you." How cute. The fake fight carries on when the group, Caroline's mom included, volunteers for the day at the Historical Society. There, Stefan and Mason meet for the first time. Stefan offers up a truce, but Mason says he already tried that. "Tell your brother to watch his back," he says.  "There's two of us. I think you're the one who needs to watch his back," Stefan warns.

Mason tells Sheriff Liz Forbes (Caroline's mom) that the Salvatore brothers are vampires. "He's an ally; he's part of the council," Liz says, not believe what he's saying about Damon. "What if I can prove it to you?" Mason responds. I didn't see this reveal coming.

Meanwhile, Tyler and Jeremy are all besties and partying with two girls. They find some sketches of demons and werewolves. The boys go in another room, and Tyler suddenly grabs Jeremy by the throat, asking what the sketches were all about. "I know what you are," Jeremy says.

At the Historical Society, Damon is handed a lemonade and spits it out in pain when it's vervain. Liz is watching and obviously spiked his drink. Right as Stefan and Damon corner Mason, thinking he was the one who did it, they're shot down by the sheriff and two of her deputies. With Caroline's sense of hearing, she realizes her mom is killing them. Elena, of course, runs to save her boyfriend. Although Caroline doesn't want to be found out, she too runs into the tomb and saves her friends by killing the cops. She lifts her head, revealing her bloody mouth and says, "Hi, Mom" as the sheriff stands there in shock. Caroline pleads with her mom not to say anything. Instead, Sheriff Forbes cries out, "Kill me." But Damon won't do it, despite the sheriff being a liability.

Tyler explains to Jeremy that he doesn't trust Mason, which is why he's been hiding the moonstone. The girls then walk in and grab the rock that Tyler is holding. He tries to get it back and when he forcefully grabs it, the girl falls down the stairs. She appears unconscious, but she's not dead. She was joking. Phew, no werewolf Tyler just yet.

Caroline overhears her mom telling Damon to make sure that she stays away. "She's not my daughter; she's gone," Liz says. The plan is to keep the sheriff in the tomb until the vervain wears off, so Damon can compel her to forget what happened.

Stefan finds a cooler of blood and tells Elena about how Katherine built up a tolerance to vervain by drinking a little each day. Stefan wants to do the same with blood since he needs to be stronger, and human blood makes them strong. Meanwhile, Caroline is scared to go home. She cries and tells Elena that Katherine will be there wanting a full report. "I'm so scared of her. Why is she doing this? What does she want?" Caroline asks. "That's the million-dollar question," Elena says. After Caroline goes to sleep, Elena says to Damon, "What you did for Caroline's mom, that's the Damon who was my friend." Damon then tells Elena that Stefan didn't drink the people blood, but needs to. "And deep down you know that," he says. So Elena asks Stefan if he really thinks he can control it and he says he can. She doesn't want him to do it alone, so she cuts herself. "It's you and me, Stefan, always," she says before he starts sucking down some of her blood. They kiss. And he's OK. Swoon.

Back at the house, Tyler explains to Mason that he almost killed a girl by accident. "I don't want to feel that way again," he says as he hands over the moonstone. But it's a mistake. Later, Mason gets in his car and Katherine's there! "I've been waiting," she says as we flash to the night he turned. "Jimmy attacked me. He's dead," he cries to her. "Everything's going to be OK," Katherine says. In the car, back in the present, she tells him how he must find the moonstone. Of course, he just got it, which makes for a very happy Katherine. The episode ends with their kiss.
