The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "Memory Lane" Season 2, Episode 4

In a Vampire Diaries episode filled with flashbacks — and a curly haired Damon — more answers about Katherine's return were revealed.

It's 1864 at the Lockwood mansion, and while Stefan and Katherine are dancing, Damon and Elena are embracing. Stefan realizes it's his imagination as he walks into the Mystic Falls Café to see Damon and Elena in the present kissing. Still a dream. Stefan finally wakes up in bed with Elena, only it's Katherine and this time it's not a dream. "Why are you back in town?" he asks. "Three reasons: You, you and you," she says.

Mason won't talk to Tyler about how he turns into a wolf other than saying, "Yes it happens and no it won't happen to you." But this isn't a good enough answer for Tyler.

At the Salvatore house, Katherine drinks from Damon's human blood stock as we flashback to Damon toasting George Lockwood for defending the South. The Lockwood gene runs in the Lockwood family and Katherine is all familiar too with their secret. Katherine and Stefan continue to converse, and Katherine asks him why he kept her picture all these years. "You want to know why I came back? Why did you?" she asks. "What is it about you that makes me still care?" he responds. Just as I think they might kiss and I might scream, Stefan stabs her in the back — literally.

Jenna hosts  a barbecue, and she and Mason are acting like BFFs. Alaric isn't exactly thrilled by this. Damon shows up an Mason introduces himself. "I've heard great things about you," Mason says. "That's weird, because I'm a dick," Damon responds. Best line of the night.

Caroline joins the barbecue and talks to Elena about how she eats all day long to avoid feeding. She mentions that Stefan too has to fight the urge every time he and Elena are together, which doesn't help Elena feel any better about dating a vampire.

Flashback to Stefan walking Katherine home unaware of her secret.  He tells her he's never met a woman like her (that's an understatement). He sees an angel when he looks at her and says, "I kiss you and I know that I'm falling in love." Poor guy. Katherine says goodnight and walks into her room where Damon is waiting. "Did my little brother's confession overwhelm you?" he says. But Katherine compels him to leave. In present day, Stefan learns from Katherine that Henry Lockwood was using vampires to cover his own tracks. The plan was to capture them all, but he told Katherine how to get out.

At Jenna's, Damon is purposely screwing with Mason and puts a knife in front of him in the pie which he turns away. Is it because of his strength? Mason finally calls out Damon for his innuendos. "Let's not spark some age-old feud that doesn't apply to us.," he says, but Damon can't get let it go. Instead he stabs him outside the house. "Now you've made an enemy," Mason responds.

Elena heads to Stefan's worried since she hasn't heard from him. But Caroline pops the tire so that their car breaks down. "Why are you rushing to get to a relationship that will never work?" Caroline says to Elena which pisses her off. Caroline is clearly trying to break them up.

In the torture tomb, Katherine explains that Stefan's dad used him and poisoned his blood with vervain to capture Katherine. That's when Damon and Stefan went to save her, which got them shot." Damon and I died for nothing," he yells. "No, you died for love," Katherine responds. Stefan is still trying to get the real reason why Katherine is back, but Katherine tells him to stop seeing Elena and warns that she'll kill everyone in her life and then her while Stefan watches. Then Katherine breaks free. She's been sipping vervain everyday for the last 150 years and just wanted to spend some quality time with him.

Elena finally shows up and she and Katherine meet face-to-face for the first time. Now this is eerie. Katherine runs away when Stefan gets there and the two go to Mystic Grill, Vampire Diaries's version of The Max. Caroline is there as well, and in the bathroom Katherine scolds her. "Care to share how you couldn't follow through with one simple task?" I just hope Caroline doesn't join Katherine on the dark side.

Tyler is still giving Mason a hard time about wanting to know the truth and asks him if he's found his rock yet. "Do you think this is a joke?" Mason asks as he heats up. He wants to know what triggers the curse and Mason admits, you have to kill somebody and then the curse is yours forever.

Caroline apologizes to Elena who accepts: "You're just being a good friend." But they sit at a different table as Elena and Stefan begin to argue in their serious and broody way. "She wants to get between us," Elena says about Katherine. "She already has," he says. Elena walks away and we see that not only has Caroline been listening, but Damon is listening with a smirk.

Stefan shows up in Elena's room and she hugs him. "I hated that fight," she says. "Me too. Felt too real," he responds. Turns out they knew Katherine got to Caroline and were faking the argument.

In the end, Stefan explains to Elena that Katherine doesn't care about anyone. We see a flashback of George telling her that the carriage is waiting. She looks back at the dead Salvatore boys and runs back. "I love you Stefan, we'll be together again, I promise." Then she kisses him.
