The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "Bad Moon Rising" Season 2, Episode 3

Alaric is back and the brothers want him to shed light on the Lockwood boys, so he suggests they go to Isobel's old research office at Duke. Elena goes with Damon and Alaric, but Stefan stays behind to keep Caroline — who's incessantly avoiding Matt — safe. Don't you hate when your boyfriend doesn't realize you're a vampire?

Bonnie gives Caroline a ring and puts a spell on it that enables her to do human things, like stepping out in the daylight. But it isn't without warning. Caroline must refrain from killing others or Bonnie will take the power away.

At Duke, the "research assistant" lets them in, but then shoots a stake at Elena which Damon runs in front of. Turns out she freaked because she thought Elena was Katherine and had read that Damon should be dead. They explain what's going on and continue to research. The assistant explains an old legend of the curse of the sun and the moon. Six hundred years ago, the Aztec people were plagued by vampires and werewolves until a shaman cursed them, making vampires slaves to the sun and werewolves servants of the moon. Werewolves can attack humans, but they attack their prey of choice: vampires. There aren't many left alive, which explains why the Salvatore brothers have never come across one.

Tyler throws a party on the Lockwood estate, and Mason warns Tyler that it must be cleared out by dark (perhaps because it's a full moon out). Caroline and Stefan show up, but after Stefan gets a call from Elena about the werewolves, Caroline has already disappeared into the woods with her boyfriend. As the sun goes down, Mason chains himself, presumably to keep him from hunting. Tyler, who earlier discovered Mason's underground room, takes Amy there, which causes Mason to quickly run away. He ends up chaining himself to a tree where he loses control and reels in anguish.

Elena asks about doppelgangers in hopes to find out anything that would explain the resemblance between herself and Katherine. We learn that doppelgangers usually torment the people they look like, which is no surprise to Elena. She eventually learns from Damon, though, that Katherine originally came from Europe and was named Katerina. He gives her the complete book about Katherine and admits to Elena that she has a right to hate him for "killing" her brother. "Have I lost you forever?" he asks. "Thank you for the book Damon," is her only response.

Stefan listens in the woods and follows the grunting sounds, obviously looking for trouble. He peers into the car where the noise is coming from and sees the yellow eyes. With lightening speed, a werewolf breaks through the window and runs away.

Caroline is getting frisky with Matt and strikes blood, by accident. Uh oh. She licks and sucks it, and Matt asks her what she's doing. As she bites him, Stefan finds her and pulls her off of him. But they also encounter the werewolf who grabs Caroline. Tyler shows up just in time to scream at his uncle (the werewolf) to stop and Mason runs away. Caroline then compels Matt to think an animal attacked him, but feels awful for hurting him. Stefan explains it won't get any easier but admits that he's in no place to give Caroline advice about her human boyfriend since he knows he should've walked away from Elena.

Tyler goes to the car where Mason returns covered in mud. "It was you," Tyler says in shock. Mason simply shakes his head. Later on, Caroline walks up to Matt, who is talking to Amy, and pretends to have a jealous tantrum so that Matt will dump her. He breaks up with her, like Caroline wanted, so that she can keep the one person she loves safe from her.

The rest of the group returns from Duke, and Alaric immediately goes to Elena's house and kisses her aunt Jenna (they had a thing last season). Jenna, by the way, is Alaric's wife's daughter's aunt — so what does that make their relation to each other?

Outside, Damon admits to Elena that he didn't know Jeremy was wearing the ring when he snapped his neck. "Elena, I'm sorry," he says. "Thank you for being honest with me. And the answer to your question about our friendship, yes, you've lost me forever," she replies.

The episode ends with Caroline waking up the next morning to find Katherine in her room.

"Don't be frightened, we're going to have so much fun together," Katherine says.
