The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "Brave New World" Season 2, Episode 2

This week's episode of The Vampire Diaries focuses on two characters learning more about who they are. Tyler starts to realize that Mason isn't just visiting to help around the house, but that the two are connected by something within them. And poor Caroline learns who she has become and only begins her struggle with her new role in the world.

The episode starts off with a disoriented Caroline tempted by an overwhelming smell — the scent of blood. As she steals a bag of it and starts drinking away, she's soon horrified before continuing to suck it down. Once the sun starts shining into her room, she finds that the light causes immediate pain on her skin. As she's figuring things out, her boyfriend Matt stops by, but soon notices that something is up. When he finally leaves the hunger consumes her and Caroline immediately grabs hold of the nurse. Luckily Caroline realizes the power of compulsion. So after a few bites, some bandages to cover the wound,  and a made up story for the injury, Caroline is on her way to the town carnival.

Jeremy is still bitter about the fact that Damon technically killed him. "I was killed by a vampire and brought back by a magic ring. How do I move on from that?" he asks Stefan. Later at the carnival, Jeremy sees Damon and threatens him that at any moment he can out their secret. Not one to sit back, Damon grabs hold of Jeremy and warns him that he can kill at any moment. Stefan, meanwhile, notices that Mason Lockwood is one strong fellow, so he decides to arm wrestle him to test his strength. Once Stefan is beat, he knows that something isn't right with the Lockwood boys. "They're not vampires, what the hell are they?" Damon says. If he only knew. Damon then comes up with a plan to compel the carnival attendant to start a fight with Tyler. It works like a charm, and the Salvatores watch from afar as Mason steps in while Tyler and carnival boy spar. Mason suddenly jumps up over him and his eyes turn yellow. Yep, he is definitely not human. And poor carnival boy is left to clean his bloody nose, which leaves him to become Caroline's first official victim.

Damon finds Caroline crying, and she asks him, "What's wrong with me?" But instead of genuinely consoling her, Damon wants to kill their newest liability. Just a he's about to stick a fork in her, Stefan stops him. "Damon, she's my friend," Elena pleads. "Whatever happens, it's on you," he responds. Bonnie walks in to discover that her best friend is now a part of the vampire clan. She runs out crying and immediately casts a hurtful spell on Damon. "Everything that happened is his fault," she says as she starts a fire with her mind. Elena steps in and stops her. "This isn't us, it can't be us," Elena exclaims.

Back at the Lockwood house, Mason denies that his eyes had in fact turn a bright shade of yellow, but Tyler doesn't believe him. He goes to his father's study where he pulls up the floorboard and reveals a safe. Hidden inside is some weird stone-like object that he grabs. I'm sure we'll soon find out what this all means.

That night, Matt sneaks into Caroline's bedroom and calls her out for dodging him all day. "I'm not in a position where I can lose someone right now...I'm pretty sure I'm in love with you," he says. I feel so sorry for Matt, the last thing he needs right now is a vampire girlfriend. Caroline kisses and hugs him. As she holds tight, her cheeks start to scale but using the willpower Stefan showed her, she's able to let the blood-sucking feelings pass. Some pretty great acting for Candice Accola this week, I must say.

Stefan too wakes up his girlfriend and takes Elena back to the carnival so that he can kiss her on top of the ferris wheel. "I came back to this town to start a life with you," Stefan says. And then he jumps with her in his arms to the top of the wheel and kisses her. "It's not going to get any easier is it?" Elena asks, to which Stefan responds, "No it's not." Well, that's an understatement.
