The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "The Return" Season 2, Episode 1

Last season, the CW parlayed a successful book series into a television show that has become an obsession for many of us. As The Vampire Diaries Season 1 left off, Katherine (Nina Dobrev) finally showed up, and we watched Hottie McHotterson vamp Damon (Ian Sommerhalder) lay a big wet one on Elena. Turns out it was actually Katherine, Elena's doppelganger and evil vampire twin from the 19th century. And then there was the whole chopping-off of Uncle John's fingers (with the ring that protects him), the death of Mayor Lockwood after the device revealed him to be something of the supernatural sort (werewolf, perhaps?), and a car crash that left Caroline's life hanging in the balance. So with that, let's get to recapping the premiere!

After a replay of the final scene from last season, John gets taken to the hospital, while Jeremy (Stephen R. McQueen) is still alive despite drinking Anna's blood and swallowing a bunch of pills. Damon wants to give Caroline (Candice Accola) some blood to help heal her. Elena is all, "I can't agree to that," but Bonnie (Katerina Graham) says, "Do it." Did I mention Bonnie is totally badass this season? Bonnie leaves and Damon brings up the kiss between them, only Elena is clueless because they haven't yet realized that he actually kissed Katherine. Let the love triangle between Damon, Elena and Stefan (Paul Wesley) begin! Another strange conversation between Jenna and Elena ensues, and Damon finally realizes. "Oh, you've got to be kidding me," he says.

Back at the Gilbert house, Stefan and Elena embrace until Stefan's instincts kick in and he throws Katherine across the room. She jets out as Elena and Damon enter. Stefan inquires what Katherine did for Damon to mistake her for Elena and he responds, "To risk another frown line encroaching on your very crowded forehead, we kissed." Stefan is not happy about this one.

Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) and Mrs. Lockwood (Susan Walters), meanwhile, are arguing because Mr. Lockwood is now dead as the result of his and Forbes' "rid the town of the vampires" plan. Damon steps in by saying, "We have to trust each other, we'll get through this." Even the ladies of Mystic Falls surrender to Damon's brooding eyes.

The new guy in town shows up — cousin Mason Lockwood, played by Taylor Kinney. Seriously, does this show ever cast an ugly dude? He and Tyler (Michael Trevino) embrace and, from what we've read about the upcoming season, these two will be prominent fixtures of the cast.

Bonnie vents to Elena, but she touches her and gets the weird witchy feeling and knows it's Katherine. She runs to call Elena just to make sure and when she hangs up, Katherine is standing behind her. "We haven't officially met, I'm Katherine...you're the best friend, right?" Bonnie gives her that cringing head pain, Katherine responds with choking, and Bonnie compels the door open, so Katherine has to stop.

Damon is all bummed out about Elena's rejection, and when she wants to talk about why he's upset, he explains, "I kissed you, thought you kissed me back, doppelganger hijinks ensued." Ian gets all the funny one-liners.

Katherine and Stefan have a little chat, and Stefan says he was never in love with her. She says she knows the truth so Stefan comes back with, "The truth is you're the same, lying, selfish, manipulative bitch that you've always been." Ouch. Well, not as painful as her responding with a nice stake through Stefan's stomach.

At Casa de Salvatore, Katherine shows up for some seduction from Damon. Their fighting turns into foreplay — and hello, shirtless Damon! Not to be outdone, Katherine shows some skin as well. "Brief pause. I have a question. Answer it, and it's back to fireworks and rockets red glare. Answer it right, and I'll forget the last 145 years I've spent missing you. I'll forget how much I loved you, I'll forget everything and we can start over," Damon says as he opens up in a way vampires just aren't built to. And this is where Katherine breaks him. "The truth is I've never loved you. It was always Stefan." Holy heartbreak.

Damon then sits on Elena's bed, drunk and sad. He starts going off on Elena about how she has to admit there is something between them. "You're the liar, Elena, there is something going on between the two of us and you know it." He kisses her and she stops him. "I love Stefan," she says. "It's always going to be Stefan." Stab in the heart No. 2. Jeremy walks in, and this is where the first shock of the season plays out. With double rejection, Damon proves he has no feelings and grabs Jeremy and snaps his head. But wait! Jeremy has that ring on and soon wakes up.

In the final scene of the episode, Caroline is visited by Katherine, who wants her to pass along a message to the Salvatore brothers: "Game on." And then shock No. 2, she smothers Caroline.

Here is a question I'll leave you with: Caroline has Damon's blood in her from earlier in the episode, so does that mean Katherine killing her turns her into a vampire?
