V Episode Recap: "We Can't Win" Season 1, Episode 8

Chad and Anna are in Geneva, Switzerland for the U.N. Energy Summit, where Anna is going to present a gift of technology to the world. Meanwhile, Erica learns that the V Task Force is investigating The Fifth Column, and Valerie goes on the run, knowing something is different about her baby and not sure she can trust Ryan.

The opening scene starts out like a dream for Mr. Chad Decker. He exits his bathroom to see Anna waiting for him and quickly realizes that all the choking and kissing she does to him (yes, he had no choice) is merely a nightmare. Yes, it was all a bad dream. On the television, however, it's a nations dream as Anna is in Geneva to unveil her crisp and clean blue energy to the world. Just when it looked like she was going to eat his face too.

Meanwhile, Tyler is still upset about the whole "dad isn't dad" thing. Erica tries to tell him it isn't true, but like every teenager on the planet he ignores the words of his loving mother. Tyler tells her he's heading to the ship where he CAN trust others and Anna, of course, can't say a word about it because he's wearing that horrid V outfit with the built in Flip HD Camcorder (sold at Wal-Mart's across the country and Universe)

Ryan heads home and gets a call from Valerie. She's upset and can't understand why her baby is so big (not to mention it has a TAIL!). Ryan pleads her to stop running away and tell him where she is, but she replies, "You had your chance." Right on cue the V doctor shows up (at least someone is still making house calls) and tells Ryan he better find that damn baby before it's too late!

Across town Erica is being briefed on a recent murder scene. Four men lie dead and all of them bear the mark of the "V" scar on the back of their ears (from the test they had to take to prove they weren't Visitors). The V Task force chick explains that it was an underground terrorist group called "The Fifth Column." Erica obviously has to act ignorant to any of the things she's telling her, but at least now she knows how much the V Task Force knows. The next thing Erica knows is that she's somehow been recruited to help find "The Fifth Column" members. What is her first lead? It's some guy named Alex Caruso.

Marcus and Anna have a quick discussion about how "The Fifth Column" is being dealt with swiftly and heavily. Anna is pleased. They both exit their room to meet up with Mr. Decker who is waiting for them. Anna tells him that she's going to blow the people of earth away with her stellar interplanetary Power Point presentation. OK maybe not. She did promise it would turn heads though. That, after all, is all you can really ask.

Erica meets up with Ryan back at the Church. Ryan explains the predicament he's in with a strung out pregnant lady who has no idea that she is carrying a Velociraptor in her belly. Erica says she knows how he feels. She had Tyler. They meet Hobbes and Father Jack in the back room where Erica tells them about "The Fifth Column" cell killings. She says they have to find this Caruso guy because he took the hard drive in the computer that may have the names and addresses of other members. Ryan leaves to go find Valerie and Erica vows that the next blood that spills is going to be the V's. Sweet!

Up on the Mother ship Joshua interrupts Lisa while she's watching a video of her and Tyler having fun. He informs her that it's her turn for the empathy test. She looks a little worried though. Uh-oh. Could mom's little girl be turning? Interesting. Low and behold she fails with flying colors. Mother is going to be so proud. Lisa thinks it could be due to her assignment of getting Tyler to fall in love with her. Joshua, however, isn't buying it. Was he telling her the truth though? Did she really fail?

Anna lets out her first slip. After meeting the Geneva Secretary, she and Chad have a brief discussion about how there are those who are willing to hear and see what she and the Vs have to offer and there are those who oppose her and the Vs entirely. Anna tells Chad that she welcomes opposition and that it could only strengthen her agenda. Chad asks, "Agenda? I thought it was a gift?" Anna merely bites her tongue and walks away. CAN'T YOU SEE THE SIGNS CHAD?

Father Jack finds Alex Caruso's father at the hospital (he's dying of cancer). Mr. Caruso tells him that his son told him the real reason the Visitors are on earth. He wants Father Jack to help save his son. Father Jack, Hobbes and Erica track down Alex Caruso (the only survivor from "The Fifth Column" terrorist cell massacre). They convince him that they are there to help.

Meanwhile, Chad Decker talks with the Geneva Secretary General (off the record of course). Chad asks why he openly opposed Anna when the two first met. His response is simple. He explains that Anna's "gifts" are doing more than helping save lives or give us this wonderful energy solution. It is also draining jobs, economies and livelihoods. Anna's plan it seems is to cause chaos and ruin while seeming to be loving and caring. She's going to make the human leaders look bad if they refuse. I like it.

Back in Anna's hotel room, she's enjoying a news update regarding a Monsoon that hit an island. Marcus tells her it's a tragedy, but Anna sees it as an opportunity. As the human politicians try to figure out a solution to help the island people, she will send rescue shuttles to help. It's almost too easy.

33 minutes in

Tyler gets up to the Mother ship and meets up with Lisa. He tells her that she's the only one he can count on anymore.

Ryan calls Erica and asks her to use her FBI connections to track Valerie's cell phone. After she hangs up (and agrees) she listens to what happened to Alex and his now dead friends. He tells her (and Jack and Hobbes) that the hard drive indeed had contact info on it and that they have a website that they would put encrypted messages on to get out "Fifth Column" type stuff. Hobbes says that's how the Vs found them. They cracked the web code. This, of course, gives Hobbes a great idea: put out a fake SOS code on the website and lure the killer back to them.

Back on the Mother ship, Joshua and another Fifth Column graduate talk about Lisa failing her "empathy" test. They're undecided on how to proceed. Do they kill her? Do they keep her around to become a possible ally? Is this a trick to see if Joshua is faithful to the Vs? Are they really going to make another Sex and the City movie? All very valid and good questions I think.

Over in the interstellar viewing lounge Tyler asks Lisa if he can live aboard the ship. Then things get a little hot and heavy between the hot-blooded and the cold-blooded. I hope there isn't a giant swimming pool around.

Ryan checks in the crew to see what's happening. Hobbes lets him in on the "use-Alex-for-bait" game as Erica gets a call from her new V Task Force boss. She's told she needs to find this Alex guy fast because there have been six other locations where "Fifth Column" members have been wiped out.

43 minutes in

Chad Decker gives his report on how Anna's saving of the tiny island has changed the mind of the Geneva council. They will now let her show her presentation of the "blue energy" since she saved thousands of lives with that exact energy. Her presentation goes off without a hitch. She squeezes two marbles together and a web of blue energy covers the room. It's clean, efficient, self-sustaining and fun for the entire family. The Geneva Secretary General still isn't buying it. He wonders why she needs this political clout for being "just a visitor."

Then, the plan is set. Alex is prepped and ready to play his part as death bait. They set up the sting in some carnival place which, if you ask me, is just zany. Even zanier is the fact that Erica found Valerie. Even zanier still is the fact she is at a V healing center about to get looked at by a V doctor. Not good. Not good at all.

Joshua, meanwhile, stops Lisa and Tyler and tells Lisa that Anna is waiting to see her when she gets back. Joshua sees the look of lust in their eyes and the wheels of what he should do continue to spin in his head.

51 minutes in

Hobbes spots a V sniper waiting to take out Alex. He doesn't have a shot though. Unfortunately, Alex panics and makes a run for it. The mistake costs him his life. Father Jack is none too happy. Erica runs after the V sniper as Hobbes shoots from his perch. That V sniper can move though. He evades the bullets and just about gets away when Erica stops him. Wait. Check that. Erica gets her butt beat. In fact, she's about to take a bullet between the eyes when Father Jack appears out of nowhere and shoots the V sniper in the arm. Hallelujah! There is, however, one problem. The V sniper...is human!

Back in space, Anna speaks with Lisa about not having human emotions and that she counts on her for her future leadership of the Vs, she squishes a lizard egg, yadda-yadda-yadda. Then, it's time for the big news about Lisa's "empathy" test results. She PASSED! Oh that Joshua is such a liar. It looks like he's going to keep Lisa around to help the resistance. Oh happy day.

57 minutes in

Chad confronts Anna about her motives. He tells her that he believes she and the Visitors are here to stay. Furthermore, he also believes that if they are there to truly help, then he wants to be a part of it. Anna asks him one simple question: "Do you trust me Chad?" He has no answer.

Meanwhile, Lisa talks to Joshua about why he lied about her test results to Anna. He says because one day he will ask her for a favor and she'll have to comply. Snap!

Back on the little blue marble we call earth, Valerie gets a "vitamin" shot. Oh no. Not her too! The nice V doctor then proceeds to look at the baby in her tummy. Uh oh! He sees it's a lizard child. Valerie asks to see her baby, but the nice V doctor isn't so nice anymore. He tells her she can't look and she can't leave. He then reaches for a weird looking hospital tool to do something horrible to her when Ryan sneaks up from behind and snaps his neck. Valerie is, needless to say, overwhelmed by the moment, but Ryan isn't done. He shoves a pill into the dead V's mouth and POOF! The body bursts into flames and disappears. Ryan extends his hand to Valerie and asks, "Do you trust me?" They should have just called this episode "Do You Trust Me?"

Marcus asks Anna (moving over to Anna's office now) why she gave them the "blue energy." She says she did it because once the humans become dependent on it she'll turn it off. I sometimes think that's the way the LA Power company works too. So this may not work out too well for Anna. At least not in Los Angeles.

Moving on, the V sniper dude who isn't really a V is strung up to the ceiling by his hands. As only Hobbes can (and this is why we love him), he wakes the guy up with a punch to the face. Erica asks the guy why he shot Alex? He tells her he did it because they can't win. Cut to black.

PARTING SHOTS

I don't know if I was in a good mood tonight or if this really was one of the better episodes, but I have to admit I really liked it.

My Rating: *7.5 of 10

*Same rating as last week, but I feel better about the show's direction even more this week. I'm still waiting to be blown away though.

Questions/Thoughts:

Not a question, but a statement: I LOVE HOBBES!

I asked the question last week: "Does anyone think Lisa might be turning a little soft?" Well, I guess we have our answer.

Is Lisa going to be carrying a human-V hybrid baby as well?

Will Lisa have Joshua killed? She can't afford to let her mother know about her human feelings.

When will Chad finally see the Vs for what they are? Or has he already? Is he playing his own game now?

When do you think we'll see Father Jack turn into Rambo?
