V Episode Recap: "Hearts and Minds" Season 1, Episode 10

Erica, Ryan, Father Jack and Hobbes learn Anna's sent a V shuttle filled with a deadly V tracker team to find them, and must figure out how to stop the shuttle from landing. Meanwhile, Anna gives Tyler his invitation to the Live Aboard Program, and Chad confronts Father Jack on what he knows about The Fifth Column.

The good news: Hobbes shoots a V shuttle out of the sky. Cheesy effects, but I'm not going to complain too much. Right on cue, though, is our trusty Father Jack who gets another fit of is this right or wrong. Unfortunately he may have been on to something; the remains of the bodies that were on board the shuttle are all human. Oh crap! Run like the wind resistance. Run like the wind!

The bad news: We're playing the whole 12 hours earlier thing. I really hate it when they do this, but I have no other choice than to play along. We learn from Joshua (who calls Ryan on the V AT&T 4G Network) that the Vs are sending down a shuttle full of trackers. Now we know why Hobbes shot the shuttle down. We also learn that nobody is really on board except for Ryan and Hobbes (who is always in the mood for blowing things up). Erica and Father Jack have a problem with the possibility of humans being on board. I expected that from Father Jack, but not from Erica.

My guess is Anna is outing Joshua. She knows someone from the Fifth Column is on board. Now she has proof.

Chad Decker visits Father Jack again. He tells Father Jack he wants to be in the fight. He wants to help the Fifth Column. Father Jack doesn't bite on the bait right away, but he gives in. He finds out that Chad travels on the V-only shuttles and (stupidly) tells him to avoid riding them today. Oh Jack what have you done? Chad is happy. I guess we'll see what side Chad is really on now.

Lisa, meanwhile, seems to be falling more and more into her human skin. She comforts a human woman who claims to have had nightmares of being probed and prodded. Anna is watching via her V-cam and looks somewhat concerned. Then we see Chad Decker. He comes in looking smug and, I'll say it, he's a little @#$%. He gives away the info that there is going to be an attack on a shuttle. Anna is pleased and asks where he got the info, but Chad relents and says he can't be giving away his source. Right, because he still has his integrity left. Not. Chad leaves and Anna tells Marcus (who undoubtedly walks in and about to give her more bad news) that they have a Fifth Column member still on board. Marcus asks if she still wants to send the trackers down. Anna tells him she has a better idea. Of course, we already know that means she's sending down humans instead.

So my first question from the beginning of this segment was how did they get a V missile? Well I guess they just needed to plug in a V lock on code to be able to lock on to V shuttles. Anyway, we finally get to the point where we started. We see the aftermath of the V shuttle being blown to bits. Erica's first response is to contact Tyler. Unfortunately he's OK. The rest of the passengers on board the shuttle, obviously, are not.

Back at the safe house Father Jack and Erica are grilling Ryan. How did this happen? I have to admit I'm a little upset at Father Jack now. He blames, blames, blames, but doesn't mention the fact that he told Chad Decker not to be on the shuttles. This is all HIS fault, but tells everyone else they are to blame. Bad, bad, bad Father Jack.

Tyler rushes to the Mother ship and is met by Anna. He's worried and doesn't know what he would have done had Lisa been aboard that shuttle. Anna tries to console him with her best act of human emotion as Tyler tells her he wants to live on board the ship now.

Over at the FBI office, Erica is being briefed on the shuttle attack. She's told that there is footage of the get-away vehicle at a tollbooth. Erica calls Ryan to ask him about the vehicle they used for the getaway while she looks at photos from the wreckage. While she's talking with him she sees that the bones are smooth. This, apparently, can't happen unless the bodies were already stripped and dead before hand. Anna set them up! Ryan asks if she has proof. Erica says she's looking right at — wait a second, the file is suddenly deleted. What? Someone at the FBI office is deleting the files. Who? Erica finds out who deleted the file and it's her boss Kendrick! Why? Is he a V? Is he a human who is working for the Vs? Either way he's on his way down to the tollbooth to get the footage. Erica (still on the phone with Ryan) tells Ryan he has to beat Kendrick down there to get rid of that footage. Something tells me from the look on Kendrick's face that he thinks Erica is involved somehow or that he thinks she knows that he deleted the file. Or he's just really self-conscious about how he looks in his jacket.

39 minutes in
Hobbes and Ryan break into the security office (I guess where the footage is). The FBI shows up one minute later, but it's too late. Ryan electrocutes the footage rendering it useless.

Our friend Chad Decker once again visits Father Jack. We still don't know entirely what side he's working on, but he tells Father Jack that he "indirectly" asked about the soon-to-be attack. Father Jack is taken aback. It's precisely at that point that Father Jack realizes that HE may have been the reason humans were on board that ship. Chad tells Father Jack that he has to come down hard on this story to keep Anna's trust and warns Father Jack that if he IS Fifth Column, it's about to get really bad for him. Father Jack tells him once again that he isn't Fifth Column.

Anna meanwhile is reviewing her "value all life" speech. She asks Marcus which one is best. Marcus doesn't quite know. Lisa then walks in and Anna asks her which is best. Lisa tells her she felt the second message delivery was best — it seemed more sincere. Anna tells Lisa her grasp of human emotion is impressive. Marcus detects a little bit of sarcasm and angst from Anna's remarks to Lisa. Lisa simply says, "Thank you mother" and leaves.

Back on earth Father Travis visits Father Jack. Father Jack confesses his faith is shaken. Not in God, but himself. Father Travis tells him if this is an issue for the law, he may need to make a confession to them instead of him.

Unfortunately that's exactly what he does. The next thing we see is Father Jack sitting in the interrogation room of the FBI office. A happy Kendrick tells Erica of his lucky find.  Are you kidding me? Father Jack you punk!

48 minutes in
Kendrick is about to get Father Jack to confess when Erica jumps in and takes control. She asks Kendrick to go grab the photos of the tire marks left at the scene. While Kendrick is gone, Erica tells Father Jack they didn't really kill the people. Anna set them up. When Kendrick walks in, Father Jack changes his story. Somehow, some way Father Jack talks his way out of getting let go.

Lisa remembers what the human told her about having this nightmare of being poked and prodded by hundreds of needles. The woman told her that she knew it was just a dream, but it felt so real. Lisa rewinds the conversation in her head as she follows the same lit path the woman described and into a secluded room she described to perfection. There, the woman is strapped to a table and surrounded by hundreds of needles that go into every part of her body. Lisa seems moved and tormented by the thought. Why are they doing it? What are they looking for with all these tests?

Then the scene I've been waiting for happens. Lisa visits Tyler at his home and says she doesn't want to see him anymore. Tyler of course pouts and gives his worst performance yet. Lisa gets through it (not sure how she did since I barely could) and leaves with Tyler in tears. I'm surprised she didn't just laugh at him.

At a press conference, Anna is giving her "value life" speech. It goes off without a hitch. She even shows a little emotion. On top of that, she says that they are even evaluating whether it's good for the V's to be there anymore. She just doesn't want any more blood shed. Chad seems to eat it all up. Does he believe her? Or is it just a show he's giving for her.

57 minutes in
Erica is looking up info at her desk when an associate comes in and says Kendrick wants to see her in the office about her involvement with the Fifth Column. We're supposed to believe it's bad news, but we find out that Kendrick is making her head of the V task force. Malik will be second in command.

Next thing we know, Malik is reporting to Anna. She tells her that she deleted all the photos that could have been damaging to the Vs. So it's MALIK! Not Kendrick? I admit I was fooled.

Over at the safe house, Father Jack arrives and admits he told Chad Decker about the attack on the shuttle and that is the reason Anna knew. For some reason, however, he thinks Chad is still a good guy. Hobbes ultimately lays it down for what it is: they're terrorists now. Having emotions or caring doesn't change that fact.

Erica comes home to a sobbing Tyler (oh please). He cries on her shoulder about Lisa using him, blah blah blah. By the way, I take back what I said about Tyler's earlier scene. THIS is his worst performance yet.

Back on the Mother ship Lisa gets acquainted with the back of Anna's fist. Why you ask? Well, Lisa decided to inform Anna that Tyler won't be coming on board after all. She surmises that Erica's pull on him was too strong to overcome. So Anna punched her. She tells Lisa they will have to find another way to get him on board. She'll say that the Fifth Column is responsible for her face looking that way. Lisa looks a little shocked, but who wouldn't if your mother just decked you. Anna, though, wasn't done. She orders the security guard to break Lisa's legs as well. SNAP! Literally! Anna loves her Lisa so much. I bet Anna said, "This is going to hurt me more than you." Nahhhhh. I bet she just didn't like her Mother's Day present. She wanted the iPad, but got a Kindle instead.

PARTING SHOTS
Not a bad episode, but I have two gripes: 1) I really hate the whole start with the ending thing though. Unless there's a good reason to do it, just tell me the story from start to finish; 2) Tyler is killing this show. I hate to beat a dead horse, but this kid drives me insane. I even gave him props for being less annoying the last few episodes. I want to blame the director or the writers or someone, but everything points to him. Am I being too harsh?  I literally had people who watched this episode with me cringe when his scenes came up. I know some of you feel the same way too.

My Rating: 6.5 of 10

Questions/Thoughts:
What side is Chad Decker on? This question still hasn't changed.

I think we know now that Lisa is slowly turning to the humans' side.

Did anyone else call his or her mother and tell her how much you love her?

What are your thoughts on Father Jack now? I personally am losing a lot of love for this character. And why is Erica agreeing with everything he says? You can't start a war if you're worried people will get hurt! Do they think this is a game? I'm very disappointed in Father Jack right now.

Assuming it's not the same reason as in the original series, what do you think the V's want with the human race? Or do you think they really want to eat us?
