V Episode Recap: "Heretic's Fork" Season 1, Episode 9

Erica, Father Jack and Hobbes realize that the Vs know names and addresses of The Fifth Column members and must take drastic measures to protect them. Meanwhile, Ryan finally reveals to Val that he's a Visitor, and Chad, with the camera rolling for "Prime Focus," begins the process aboard the Mother ship's Medical Bay to have his aneurysm removed.

7 minutes in

We begin where we left off with the human sniper being interrogated by Father Jack, Erica and Hobbes. Hobbes continues to help the man remember things by punching him in the face, but the guy sticks with his story of the Vs threatening to kill his wife and child if he didn't take out the four Fifth Column members. Just as Hobbes is about to punch him again, Father Jack stops him. There's only so much a priest can put up with, I guess.

Meanwhile, Ryan and Valerie are running out of the V Healing Center. Of course Valerie has tons of questions like what just happened and why did you snap my doctor's neck? Ryan has no choice but to flat out tell her that he's a Visitor. He goes on to tell her that they need to get out of dodge because they want their baby.

On the Mother ship Anna is welcoming the humans who have come aboard for the "Live Aboard Program." Marcus runs in and tells her that they have found a half human and half V baby. Anna looks somewhat displeased. A few moments later we realize she is more than displeased. She wants Joshua to get the top 29 physicians together and wants Marcus to find that baby. This is top priority.

Ryan, meanwhile, is getting his stuff together when two Vs suddenly storm the bedroom and start attacking him. Ryan quickly disposes the two worthless soldiers, but not before he slices one of their faces open. Valerie sees the lizard-like skin underneath and is about to have a melt down when Ryan tells her that he has to take her somewhere safe — somewhere the Vs won't be able to find them.

18 minutes in

Anna grills the physicians about the ability for humans and Vs to have babies. They told her it wasn't possible, yet here it is. She tells each of the physicians to push forward on the human extraction plan for the Live Aboard Program at an accelerated pace. Once the holograms have disappeared, she turns to Joshua and tells him that once they find the father and the mother he is to dissect them. She wants him to find out how it was even possible and figure out a way to stop it from happening again. "The baby?" Joshua asks. Anna tells him to destroy it. Anti-abortion groups are going to be all over Anna on this one if they find out.

Back down on earth, Valerie is getting a checkup by Ryan's trusted V doctor and Valerie is still not happy. After some back and forth conversations about why and how could you, Valerie tells them that she was injected with the Vitamin shot. The V doctor tells Valerie that the Vs are tracking her, but she has come up with her own shot that can scramble the signal. However, it won't go into effect for 24 hours. Ryan tells her to give Valerie the shot.

Back at the FBI office, Erica gets a call from Ryan. He tells her that he's taking Valerie and the doctor to "The Thompson's" who have helped Fifth Column members disappear back in the day. He goes on to tell her that he has to disappear for a while and that she'll have to go forward without him for a while.

Chad Decker does another host wrap for his soon-to-be experience on the V Mother ship to take care of his aneurism. I guess this is another sign that he's still speaking kindly on the V's behalf.

Back at Erica's home, Tyler and Erica have a chat. The conversation goes south as expected. He's still not happy about being lied to and she's asking for another chance and OF COURSE he's wearing the V jacket, so once again she's unable to tell him anything about what the Vs really are. This is getting old pretty fast.

Anna and Lisa walk through the halls of the Mother ship. Anna tells Lisa that they need to move up Tyler's arrival to the ship and their unknown plans for him. Anna also explains that they will only need him there until they no longer need him. Lisa asks, "then what?" Anna just smiles and walks away.

Anna then visits Joshua who tells her that the experiments on the humans have begun (we see humans getting bracelets and injections in another room). Then Mr. Good News Marcus arrives to update Anna on the search for the hybrid baby. He tells her that the two guards have been killed. Anna, again not too pleased, tells Marcus to release a soldier. Marcus warns her that these dooms day soldiers could turn the humans against them if they see what they can do. Anna tells Marcus that he better go with the soldier then to make sure it doesn't mess up.

26 minutes in

Hobbes is still torturing the sniper (I love this guy). Just as he's about to do some really nasty stuff to this scum of a human, though, Father Jack walks in. DAMN! Now the jig is up and Hobbes has to stop. Hobbes tells Father Jack that this human has lost all privileges of being treated decently and Father Jack is going to know it at the end of the day. Then...Ring-ring! It's a call from Joshua from the Mother ship.

Meanwhile, Anna is showing Tyler around the ship when Lisa walks in. Anna tells Lisa to tell him the good news. Lisa reluctantly (slightly) obliges by telling Tyler his application has been accepted for the Live Aboard Program. Tyler's joy is obvious, but he isn't quite sure how his mother will take it. Anna tells him not to worry. In fact, she'll have Lisa come down and explain how wonderful it is later that night.

Father Jack calls Erica on her cell and tells her that Joshua informed him that the Vs have sent a super soldier after Ryan and the baby. Erica tells Father Jack that Ryan is taking himself off the grid so she can't find him or warn him about the new soldier that's after him. She then goes on to explain that the human sniper guy is bad and that he's an ex-military guy who can't be trusted. Father Jack looks a little disappointed. Why does that Hobbes always have to be right? Erica tells Father Jack that she's heading over to find the V sniper guy's wife to see if she knows anything about this hard drive that was stolen.

Ryan, meanwhile, arrives at the Thompson's house. They'll be safe now. Or at least they thought. The Super Soldier is (supposedly) standing outside the house with a weapon in his hand. He's already found them.

43 minutes in

On board the Mother ship Chad Decker is getting some weird technological halo scan while others watch (yes, the cameras are rolling). He finally wakes up with Anna watching him. She tells him that the surgery was successful. We find out through their dialogue that Chad has no family to speak of and nobody else to turn to. He thanks Anna for her help and, well, everything else too (career). She tells him she wishes everyone felt the same way he did. Chad asks if there is something wrong or something he can help with. She tells him that the Fifth Column has proven to be a nuisance to the V's cause of peace. Chad vows to out them.

Erica arrives at the sniper's house and talks to his wife. She learns that the Vs have been nothing but kind to them. In fact they healed her child who was paralyzed from the neck down. Erica excuses herself to use the bathroom, but goes snooping instead. She goes up to the sniper's office and finds the missing hard drive.

Erica returns to the (wherever it is they're holding the sniper guy captive) safe house and pleads with the sniper to tell her where the Thompson's house is. The hard drive has mostly been wiped of all the information other than a few names. The sniper guy won't tell them. Erica knows how hard it must be for him to do this. She knows how much sniper guy has had to go through with the Vs saving his daughter while humans couldn't or wouldn't. She knows he trusts them because of it. However, if he doesn't tell her where the Thompson's live then he'll have to tell Hobbes. That will be less pleasant. The sniper guy still won't budge. Hobbes tells Father Jack, "It's time for all decent people to leave the room." Father Jack does.

Hobbes gets into the car with blood splattered across his face and tells the others he has the address.

At the Thompson's abode everything seems fine. That is until the lights get cut. Ryan pulls out his trustee V baton and readies for action. Mr. Thompson scopes the place with his rifle, but is eliminated quickly by the V soldier. Next is Mrs. Thompson. The V soldier makes a quick stab into her abdomen. Then we see how the Vs work. They can see heartbeats from a distance with a built-in sonar sense. He sees the human's upstairs. As Ryan tries to escape with Val and Dr. Pearlman the V soldier drops down on top of them. He and Ryan fight for a bit before the V soldier gets the upper hand. Luckily, Erica and Father Jack arrive and unload their entire clips of ammo into the walking lizard. It only wins them a few moments though. Ryan, Val and Dr. Pearlman rush out to the waiting truck with Erica and Father Jack. The V soldier re-emerges through the front door and is about to pounce on the group when Hobbes thrusts an axe into the soldier's chest. It knocks him to the ground, but it really only pisses him off. Hobbes is in disbelief. Erica calls for him to get in the truck. He happily does and the group tears off into the darkness.

56 minutes in

Father Jack, Erica and Hobbes see Ryan off at the train station, but Valerie tells him she doesn't want him to come. She tells Ryan to stay and she and Dr. Pearlman will disappear.

Back at the church Father Jack gets an unlikely visit from Chad Decker. He gives a sob story about how he thinks the Vs are keeping secrets and how Anna is worried about a resistance group called The Fifth Column. He asks Father Jack if he's ever heard of them. Father Jack smartly says, "No." Chad Decker presses him further by asking him to keep his eyes and ears open for anyone who might know about The Fifth Column because he wants to know that he's not alone in feeling badly towards the Vs. Father Jack tells him he'll let him know if he hears anything. This is a good scene. We're still not sure what side Chad is working on and I kind of like the "who can you trust" scenario.

Meanwhile, Marcus updates Anna regarding the failed attack of the V soldier and the news that the baby has now fully disappeared from radar. Anna probably wishes Marcus were a glass-half full kind of guy...Nah! Moving on, Chad Decker walks in and tells Anna that he may have a lead on The Fifth Column and he'll give her more info as it comes in. Maybe it's just me, but couldn't he have just called her on the cell phone to tell her that?

Erica is having a drink at home when Lisa shows up. She tells her that Tyler isn't home, but she can come in and wait for him. They have a nice chat. Lisa tells Erica that she really likes Tyler and his views on life and that he's interested in doing the Live Aboard Program. "What?" Erica asks. She didn't know about this and now she's hearing it from Tyler's girlfriend? The thought overwhelms Erica a bit and she gets emotional. The act of which touches Lisa. Lisa tells Erica she's sorry, but Erica says it's not her fault. Lisa responds by saying it IS her fault just as Tyler walks in. Lisa pulls Tyler aside and tells him that she doesn't think it's a good idea for him to come live on board the ship. Tyler pleads her to change her mind, but Lisa leaves. Tyler is infuriated with his mother and asks what she said to Lisa. Erica says she didn't say anything, but Tyler gives her his final decision: he is moving to the Mother ship and she can't do a thing about it. My question is: is Lisa really that smart? Did she play him that way to pull him further away from Erica? Or did she really feel like he shouldn't come because she knows what is going to happen to him?

I get my answer in the next scene. While standing in the middle of a giant pool with basketball-sized lizards floating it, Lisa tells Anna about her plan to not bring Tyler on board. She feels like she needs Tyler's mother to become more trusting of her before she lets him come up. Anna is disappointed, but tells Lisa she trusts her judgment. As Lisa walks away Anna knows something is wrong. That creepy little lizard smile gives her away. Momma's little girl is about to go rogue.

Speaking of rogue, the next scene shows Hobbes walking the sniper dude out into a middle of the woods. He tells the sniper guy that he's going to tell him everything he knows about the Vs and then he's going to beg him to kill him. Oh that Hobbes!

PARTING SHOTS
I feel the same as last week, to be honest. This was a good episode in that we finally got a little bit of action. We still don't know who is on what side of the V vs. Human war-to-come. Ryan finally tells Valerie that he's a V. I feel a little bit better about things this week than I did a few weeks back.

My Rating: 7 of 10

Questions/Thoughts:
What side is Chad Decker on?
What side is Lisa on?
Does Anna know her girl is slipping?
When will Anna make Joshua take the human emotion test?
Will the V Soldier report back to Anna about Erica, Father Jack and Hobbes?
