New mom Reagan Brinkley (Christina Applegate) returns to work while her husband, Chris (Will Arnett), takes on the role of stay-at-home dad in the premiere of this comedy series about learning the ropes of parenting. Reagan's zany boss, Ava (Maya Rudolph), meanwhile, doesn't quite acknowledge the changes in Reagan as she welcomes her back to the office.
Chris tries to spice things up in the bedroom after turning to a new friend (Will Forte) for ideas. Elsewhere, Ava discovers her ex (Jorma Taccone) is engaged and blames Reagan for advice she once gave that lead to their break-up.
Reagan and Chris look for a family car that's not too boring, and Chris goes into negotiating mode. Elsewhere, Ava wants to cover more serious topics on her show but isn't happy about the work that goes into doing it.
Reagan worries that she's failing as a mother when her schedule keeps her from Amy. Chris, meanwhile, is a hit with Amy's playgroup. Elsewhere, Ava has trouble adjusting to the limited time she spends with Reagan.
A look back at Amy's birth includes Reagan trying to cope with her delivery plans going awry and Chris struggling with the idea of leaving his job at a law firm. Ava, meanwhile, tries to circumvent the fears that are driving Reagan and her apart.
Reagan tries to improve her relationship with her parents (Blythe Danner and Richard Schiff) in order to set an example for Amy. Elsewhere, Ava examines her interactions with the staff following one member's death; and Chris decides to make lifestyle changes.
Reagan and Chris go on a date to rekindle their romance, while Ava babysits Amy. During the evening, Ava meets a single dad (Jason Lee) who proves to be quite different from her boyfriend (Chris Diamantopoulos).
Reagan turns to her mom (Blythe Danner) for help making Amy's first Christmas perfect. Chris, meanwhile, must navigate the mall to find a gift for Reagan. Elsewhere, Ava frets over her relationship after Kevin decides to spend Christmas with his ex.
Reagan wants to secure a spot at a prestigious preschool for Amy and tries to win favor by organizing a charity auction with Ava's help. Elsewhere, Chris and his brother find that they haven't outgrown their competitive ways from childhood.
Reagan and Chris brave the airport with Amy in tow during their first trip as new parents. Elsewhere, Ava officiates the wedding of her former bandmate (Alanis Morissette), but past conflicts soon resurface; and Kevin discovers Ava's views on marriage.
Chris agrees to host a joint birthday party for Amy with his enthusiastic neighbors, much to Reagan's chagrin. Ava, meanwhile, tries to put her own special touch on the party, while Nancy hopes the gathering will help her land a man.
Chris wants another baby and goes to extremes to get Reagan on board with the idea. Elsewhere, Ava joins a mentorship program, which doesn't go as she planned; and Missy feels guilty about helping Luke.
Chris gets a job on Ava's show, leading Reagan to realize how important space at work is to her. Elsewhere, Ava's father and his family visit, but spending time with Ava takes a backseat to meeting celebrities, including Sharon Osbourne—Ava's rival.
Chris struggles with jealousy over Reagan's working relationship with Luke, but advice from Reed pushes Chris over the edge. Elsewhere, Ava works with a celebrity trainer to help her prepare for a 10K run in which her rival is also competing.
