Premise: A two-part Ken Burns biography of the boxer who, 100 years ago, was “the most famous and notorious African-American on Earth.” Jack Johnson (1878-1946) “insisted on being free,” says narrator Keith David, and this included being free to sleep with a white woman. His talent, wealth and charisma enabled him to do so, but Part 1 charts the search for a “great white hope” to stop him.
