Twenty-One

1956, TV Show

The epicenter of the 1950s quiz-show scandals. Players tried to score 21 points by answering questions from a particular category (point value was determined by the degree of difficulty) while both were in isolation booths. `Twenty-One' went bust (and took other game shows down with it) when it was revealed that the hugely popular Charles Van Doren, who had won more than $125,000 in 14 appearances, received answers prior to the broadcast. Maury Povich hosted a 2000 revival of the show on NBC.
