True Blood Episode Recap: "I Got a Right to Sing the Blues" Season 3, Episode 6

On Sunday's True Blood, Russell gets to know Sookie and then makes Sophie-Anne an offer she can't refuse. Lorena struggles with a difficult task regarding Bill. Lafayette and Jason face obstacles in their new flirtations. Jessica and Arlene bond, sort of. Tara resists Franklin's bizarre charms and the rift between Tommy and his parents become clearer.

BILL

Now that Sookie, Bill, Eric and a displeased Russell are back at Edgington Manor, the king has an order for Lorena: kill Bill. She's obviously distressed by this turn of events, as it's clear now that she truly loves Bill, but an order is an order.

She pins him down and proceeds to maim and flay him with careful precision. Bill punctuates his own blood-letting by telling her that he wishes he knew her before "he" turned her. Who is Lorena's maker? Did I miss that? It almost sounds like it could be Russell, with his Forrest Gump-like ability to be everywhere in the history of these people (see: Eric's father's murder).

Bill's nice-guy routine is clearly affecting her, but it's not slowing his torture. It's only when Coot and Debbie show up that things pause for a moment, so that Lorena can allow them to feed off Bill. Sookie eventually finds her way to Bill, but a tense face-off with Lorena appears to end badly (see below).

AT MERLOTTE'S

I've always enjoyed Arlene's nervous-Nelly routine, so it's great to see her reaction when a hungry Jessica's fangs emerge at the sight of Arlene's paper cut. Arlene's having a bad day because Jessica has glamored all the customers to be mean to her. But by the end of the hour, Jessica realizes the error of her ways and glamors Arlene's last, finicky patron to be nice — and leave a big tip.

SAM

We finally get explanations for a) the Mickenses' shiftiness and b) why Tommy is so battle-scarred, and they're kind of interesting. It seems that Melinda and Joe Lee have been throwing their boy to the dogs, literally. Sam figures it out, and with an assist from Andy about a nearby dog-fighting operation, he's off to save his little brother.

TARA

In order to avoid becoming Franklin's vampire bride, Tara has a plan. She sweet-talks him into their future marital bed and while he sleeps, she bashes in his skull with one of the various medieval torture instruments conveniently displayed on the bedroom wall. If Franklin is indeed dead, I'm sad that we won't be treated to more of James Frain's hilarious madness ("You didn't notice that I've shaved!").

Since she knows Sookie is in the house, she telepathically sends her a message that she's coming to get her so they can escape. Tara's plan basically works, until she again crosses paths with a wolf, a white one with shiny red eyes. But fear not, it's just Alcide, one of the good werewolves, and he has a car.

JASON and LAFAYETTE

Cupid was not kind to the men of Bon Temps this week. Crystal and Jason's moon-dappled courtship comes to an abrupt halt when she appears to smell something kind of funny in the air (highly trained senses on that girl, ay?). Later, Jason discovers that not only does Crystal have a fiancé, she's also apparently decided to pretend not to know Jason.

Similarly, Lafayette and Jesus enjoy a nice evening together, first over the Merlotte's pool table and then back at Laf's bizarro pimp crib. Their sweet, chaste date night (they agree not to have sex) goes sour when the meth-head rednecks from last week — one of whom is Crystal's fiancé, by the way — show up to exact revenge by taking a bat to Lafayette's car's windshield. Their presence alerts Jesus to Lafayette's extracurricular job, and he's not happy about his nascent flirtation with a drug dealer. He hops in the car and tells Laf the evening is over.

SOOKIE and RUSSELL

Russell's interest in Sookie continues as the pair sit down over a crackling fire ("it makes everything more dramatic," the king says) to play a game of questions. Russell wants to know about Sookie's powers, and she appears to be totally honest with him. She reveals that her grandfather was also telepathic, but as far as her other powers are concerned, she's just as clueless as he is.

Unsatisfied with his little fact-finding mission, he grabs Eric and they're off to see Sophie-Anne. (Aside: Will Talbot's hilarious disgruntled spouse routine ever amount to anything? I enjoy it, for sure, but where are we going with this character?) Russell assures Eric that they'll take care of his "magister problem," which is good news because: What's going on with Pam?

I love that Sophie-Anne is so bored that a fun night in her day room includes scratching hundreds of lottery tickets. Russell interrupts her gleeful gambling with yet another marriage proposal, one that comes with full forgiveness of all her debts. She refuses yet again, claiming that by framing Eric for the V-dealing operation, she's taken the heat off herself for now. On cue, Eric enters and renounces his fealty to her. Uh-oh.

"I have known some of the finest queens who have ever lived. You, my dear girl, are no queen," Russell says to her, and she realizes she has no choice but to accept his proposal.

Back at the manor, Sookie escapes with Tara's help and locates Bill, who's bleeding out after Lorena's perverse ministrations. Sookie steels herself to fight Lorena to save her fiancé, but the vampiress makes quick work of dispatching Sookie, pinning her to the wall and biting her neck.

What did you think of "I Got a Right to Sing the Blues"? Are you worried about Pam? Which couples are you rooting for? Will Bill die? (Spoiler alert: Of course not.) And do you totally want to attend Russell and Sophie-Anne's wedding?
