13 Times ABC Show Titles Made Us Say WTF

What's in a name? A lot when it comes to show titles. Naming a show isn't easy. You want to be brief but convey what the show is about, catchy but not cliché, original but not too out-there, inviting but not alienating. The last one sounds like a no-brainer, but tell that to ABC. For a network nicknamed the Alphabet, it has been the worst title offender in recent years. (But hey, they are into irony.)

Question: I'm a fan and read your column every week. I've watched the pilots for Forever and Red Band Society, and have added them to my list of shows I'll be watching. I hope they do well. I was wondering if you have seen them, and if so, what did you think? I found Red Band Society to be a feel-good show. I can't help but wonder, though, if it shouldn't be on a younger TV station like MTV, and the fact that it isn't makes me worry about its chances, as it is geared toward a younger audience. Forever is very Sherlock Holmes, which is right up my alley, and I love it whenever Ioan Gruffudd is on my TV screen. Do you think making the pilots available early hurts a TV show? What are your thoughts? - Carmelita

ABC Boss on Canceling Trophy Wife, Diversity, and the End of Grey's Anatomy

ABC President Paul Lee is very excited about the network's new batch of comedies, but at Tuesday's Television Critics Association fall previews, he spent some time defending a comedy he had to cancel last year.

See all the news from ABC's TCA day

Lee fielded several questions about the cancellation of Trophy Wifea low-rated comedy that some critics believed ABC never gave a chance to succeed by putting it in the network's successful Wednesday night comedy block. "We were always disappointed... not to get a pulse for it," Lee said...read more

Ask Matt: Finales (Castle, Mentalist), Penny Dreadful, Cancellation Fallout

Send questions and comments to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow me on Twitter!

Question: Last week, you wrote about how producers "often — too often, to be honest — try to end their seasons with a bang ... in hopes of stimulating interest for when they return several months later." I understand the reasoning, and it definitely worked for me with Person of Interest — it was game-changing and left me very curious to see how it goes, but satisfying. However I had the opposite reaction to Castle, which looked to be heading for a good place to pause with a minor game-changer (Mr. & Mrs. Castle), even got some nice wedding emotion going, and then threw in a ridiculous "dun-dun-dun" moment which had zero emotional impact as no one believes Castle could be dead. Most of these cliffhangers now seem to me like cheap tricks, a shyster trying to "buy" your viewing next fall, while moving the story to a new level seems a legitimate way of keeping interest and far more likely to have a good payoff in terms of the story next year. Anyway, it led me to wonder are there any "cliffhangers" of the past that you remember with pleasure and/or satisfaction, or is it only the game-changers that stand out in your mind? As always, thanks for an interesting column. — Elle
