A successful private attorney took a job as a Los Angeles County public defender after her divorce. Many of the episodes opened with the middle-aged O'Neill talking about her personal and professional problems to her psychiatrist (the voice of series producer Barney Rosenzweig, who had also done Gless's hit series `Cagney & Lacey').
