Q: I just read your Dispatch regarding HBO's summer session with the critics at the TCA press tour. HBO has long been a place where I could consistently find cutting-edge, quality series programming as a welcome diversion from the cookie-cutter, "seen it before" series on many broadcast networks. With the departure of such heavy hitters as Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Sex and the City and Extras, I was anxiously waiting to see what new programming was coming our way. With the exception of the...

Q: This may not be your field, but I was very curious about the Emmy eligibility of In Treatment. Into what category would the exceptional actresses and actors playing Gabriel Byrne's patients fall? Supporting Actor/Actress? Guest Actor/Actress? Due to the show's unique format, I could see a case being made for either category. Their nominations might be a bit of a long shot, but their work has been so exceptional (especially young Mia Wasikowska's) that if they end up snubbed, hopefully it ...

HBO Continues In Treatment | Today's News: Our Take | 6/23/2008
HBO has confirmed the renewal of their hit freshman show In Treatment starring Gabriel Byrne and Dianne Wiest. Byrne, who played psychiatrist Dr. Paul Weston, will return as well as Wiest who plays his therapist, Dr. Gina Toll. The other "patients," who were each featured once a weekday, have yet to be confirmed. Joining the shows producing team of Rodrigo Garcia, Hagai Levi, Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg will be Warren Leight (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), who will serve as executive...

Q: In your April 14 column, Grant seems very quick to write HBO off like many others, but I'm with you. It's inevitable that a network's "untouchable" period can't last forever, as evidenced by NBC's rough periods after the late '80s and again earlier this decade. Times like that are, in the long run, healthy and necessary for networks because it keeps things from getting too stale. Instead of reaching a point where HBO might've gotten lazy, now it has to really strive to keep pushing the ...

Q: Many people I know, including my wife, my sister and several friends (including a psychotherapist), are completely enthralled by In Treatment. We all look forward to each episode and discuss it at length. Gabriel Byrne is a marvel, as are the other actors, particularly Sophie. I can't understand why it will likely not return on HBO. I tried to find a place on the HBO Web site where we could voice our concerns, but the shows listed on the site for comment do not include In Treatment. Can you...

Q: While at first I was devastated by the writers' strike, things haven't been as bad as I feared. Two reasons are The Wire and the return of Lost, but one of the biggest is the HBO show In Treatment. I've found the show fascinating, more so as it progresses. Gabriel Byrne is wonderful. It's so interesting to see him as appealing, attractive and insightful when he's working as a therapist, yet so withholding and remote to his own family. You haven't written much about this show. What do you ...

Q: Have you sampled In Treatment on HBO? I watched the entire first week of five episodes, and it's a show I will have to think about before forming an opinion. The actor playing the therapist [Gabriel Byrne] is commanding and wonderful, showing his vulnerability as a person while trying to play an impartial therapist. But each of the characters (patients) is outwardly difficult (as opposed to depressed/quiet); each has come to Paul asking for an "opinion," which I think distorts the reality of...

Jeers: HBO's Stuck In Treatment | Cheers & Jeers | 1/29/2008
Jeers to HBO for its borderline obsession with shrinks. The cable net's new five-nights-a-week drama, In Treatment, has its breakthroughs, among them Gabriel Byrne's skillfully subtle work as a therapist with his own issues. But anybody who's sat through the soul-baring sessions on The Sopranos and Tell Me You Love Me may feel like they're trapped in a recurring nightmare. HBO's psychological fixation is rivaled only by its fetish for series about sex (Tell Me, Real Sex, etc.) and showbiz...

HBOs In Treatment | Today's Top Videos | 1/28/2008
Hows this for an interesting show concept? A series that airs five days a week, 30 minutes a pop, for nine weeks straight in real time. Definitely different. But whatever you do, dont be expecting your typical therapy show with this one. HBOs In Treatment focuses on one shrink (Gabriel Byrne), his four patients (who each have a different time slot Mondays through Thursdays) and his own therapy session (with Dianne Wiest) on Fridays. Turns out this uniquely...

Should You Seek Treatment from Gabriel Byrne? | TVGuide.com's Strike Recovery Guide | 1/28/2008
The when: Premieres Monday, Jan. 28, at 9:30 pm/ET on HBO, and airs thereafter Monday through Friday over nine weeks. Why watch?: HBO's newest drama examines the professional practice and private dramas of a psychotherapist, played by the electrifying Gabriel Byrne. The genius part is that the guy's a real jerk but he's a master at hiding his angry side when he's in sessions. A sweethearted softie in front of his patients, his dark bitterness only comes out in sessions with his own...
