2007, TV Show

May 30, 2007: The Retreat

I almost missed the second episode! I was so confused — and that’s saying something — look who I work for! I thought it was just going to be a repeat of the pilot episode, but we got lucky. Jay and Tyler were on for two full hours. And I’m glad they repeated the pilot, because my memory needed to be refreshed. If ABC cancels this show, my heart will be broken. So far, it has me skipping beats. I am not just saying that because I write this blog. I mean it — this show is really entertaining. So much happened in the second episode. Most of the important information came from the flashbacks. I knew Carlton Fog (William Sadler) was not a good person. He seemed like a jerk from the start and his creepy-bald friend proved me right. But the flashbacks are what really worry me. Will Traveler (Aaron Stanford) knew him. He referred to him as “Carlton” instead of simply saying “Tyler’s Dad” or “Mr. Fog”. And he had supposedly never m... read more

Traveler's Matthew Bomer Gives Reasons to Hit the Road

Matthew Bomer, Traveler

Think you know your best friends? Well, if your best friend is named Will Traveler, you probably don't. In this hot new series (which airs both the pilot and the second episode tonight on ABC at 9 pm/ET), two college pals find out that their friend may have framed them for a terrorist act. Matthew Bomer, a one-time buzzed-about candidate to play Superman in last year's Superman Returns, stars as Jay, who is on the run from the law. managed to catch up with him to find out about his current gig and his Tru Calling past. I really like the show, but I've got to warn you that I also liked Day Break and The Nine.Matthew Bomer: [Laughs] Well, you know, it's all about timing. Hopefully. read more

Lost and Found

First off, I'd like to thank the nearly 9 million people who tuned in to Traveler's May 10 sneak preview. You guys made Traveler one of the most successful May sweeps premieres of all time. And a special thanks goes to those fans who have checked out the blog and left comments. I read all of them. In fact, Ranger99's comment from May 4, in which he asked about the number of episodes, has inspired this blog entry. So, what's with this post's title? Well, it turns out the creator of Traveler, yours truly, is also a huge fan of another ABC serialized thriller: Lost. I just finished watching the Lost Season 3 finale, and it got me thinking about what makes good TV. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse (Lost's executive producers) and company have an unparalleled knack for blowing our collective mind. This season finale delivered. It was fantastic. It not only answered a few huge questions, but it also raised a new question to drive the series forward. So why then have Damon, Carlton and Co. ... read more

Why is ABC putting on ...

Question: Why is ABC putting on Traveler when The Nine would be a perfect fill-in for that time slot? I'm one of the few that still want The Nine to return. It was interesting and well thought-out — at least to me. If NBC can bring back Studio 60, why can't ABC bring back one really good show like The Nine? Have you seen Traveler yet, and what are your thoughts? I know it's TV and yada yada yada, but still showing Americans blow up a building doesn't look too appealing to me. Answer: I've only seen the pilot of Traveler, which ABC curiously sneaked on air last Thursday after Grey's Anatomy (anything to keep Men in Trees off the air, I guess) and which will be repeated May 30 when the show is relaunched in the post-season on Wednesdays at 10 pm/ET. I thought it was well produced, reasonably suspenseful and completely preposterous. Just what we need after this year of serialized disasters: another far-fetched conspiracy chase thriller. ABC is burning it off with a shortened episode order ... read more

Ratings: Betty, CSI and Grey's Hit Lows

This Thursday in ratings-land:8 pm/ETThe penultimate Survivor: Fiji put up a typical 13.64 million total viewers, as Ugly Betty (9.38 mil) plunged 1.3 mil. Earl's riotous season-ender (6.6 mil) lost 980K versus last week's Laugh 'N Sniffer. Smallville (3.36 mil) dipped 200K. (Do not get me started on the supersized Office and Scrubs numbers.)9 pmWith 18.6 million viewers, CSI gave Grey's (19.07 mil, down 1.9 mil) a scare. Speaking of scares, Supernatural (2.85 mil) spooked 310,000 fewer folk. Regarding Grey's, welcome, welcome, welcome, Chyler Leigh as "forward" bar girl. You are a much-needed shot in Derek's arm.10 pmWhile the Shark's away... no one gets to play. Airing in a special time slot, Without a Trace's season finale drew 14.4 million, easily topping ER (9.2 mil, up 1.2 mil). ABC's Traveler sneak peek (8.8. mil) fell short of the Thursday-at-10 debuts of both October Road (14.38 mil) and Men in Trees (11.9 mil).UPDATE: I just changed the headline because though I didn't res... read more

May 10, 2007: "You've Got to See the World Before You Can Change It"

I really liked this show. And lately, television and I have not been getting along. Just last week I decided to break up with Grey’s Anatomy. This was a big step for me, because Grey’s and I have been together since the beginning. But I’ve decided to move on… and I’d like you to meet my new love interest: Traveler. Every time I try to explain this show to my friends and family I find myself calling it “The Traveler,” but nope! It’s just Traveler. My infatuation for Traveler began the moment Jay spoke the words, “My father died, because someone in the government betrayed him. That didn’t make me hate my country — it made me want to fix it.” That line took my breath away and I instantly fell in love with the lead character Jay Burchell (the oh-so-cute Matthew Bomer). I know he’s got a trusting and sympathetic girlfriend, Kim (Pascale Hutton), but a girl can dream.I barely noticed "Will Traveler" (Aaron Stanford). I do... read more

The Road Less Traveled

Robert Frost's oft-quoted poem ends with the lines: "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference."It's funny to sit here on the eve of Traveler's series launch and think back to the point where I stood at the proverbial fork in the road. It was about two years ago. We were finishing production on my first produced screenplay, Disney's family adventure film Eight Below. The phone rang. It was my agency. The agent on the line — who, by the way, is nothing like Ari Gold on Entourage — asked me a simple question: "What do you think about TV?" To which I quickly replied, "I enjoy it. Regularly. Why?" The answer came back: "Because now that you have a movie made, you should really think about television."And there it was, in all of its metaphorical glory — the fork. Should I go back to writing movies? Or should I take this new, less trodden path towards the land of TV? I, of course, went right back to the co... read more

ABC's Timely Traveler Hits the Road Early

The start date for the new ABC drama Traveler has been pushed up: The series, about a couple of coeds on the lam after being framed for a terrorist act, will now debut on May 10 after Grey's Anatomy. It will then move into its regular Wednesdays-at-10 time slot on May 30, when the premiere gets an instant replay.... Good-ish news for Studio 60, The Nine, Two Others

The Hollywood trades are reporting this morning that additional script orders have been awarded to ABC's The Nine, Men in Trees and Help Me Help You (four each), as well as NBC's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (for three). Traditionally, such script orders are a decent precursor to a full-season pickup, though it must be noted that the "vote of confidence" didn’t work out particularly well for last season's Threshold, E-Ring or Out of Practice. In related news, NBC has ordered an extra, 25th episode of ER for this season, while ABC has snipped its order for the mid-season series Traveler from 13 episodes to eight. read more

I have a comment on a ...

Question: I have a comment on a topic that I've never seen you address, and I could be the only one who feels this way. With so many new shows in the fall, it's really hard sometimes to keep them all straight, and the names of the shows often make this more difficult. They're not very distinctive! Last season, there were three sci-fi shows premiering, and they all had one-word names: Invasion, Threshold and Surface. I could never keep straight which one was on which network, and even though I had read your reviews and knew that you endorsed one especially, I could never remember which one. For this coming fall I've counted eight new series with one-word titles, and none of them are very distinguishable (Vanished, Standoff, Justice, Smith, Jericho, Shark, Traveler, Kidnapped). Just a note to the networks: If I need a visual aid to remember which shows I want to check out, I'm not likely to watch — unless they become hits and the name is repeated enough to remind me. Not a very good ... read more
