Episode: "Captain Jack Harkness" Season 1, Episode 12

Now that was Torchwood at its best - graced with lots of Captain Jack time, a riveting time-rift mystery and, let's not forget, one juicy kiss. The main storyline followed Tosh and Jack, who went off to investigate an apparent haunted house, the Ritz, a derelict dance hall, where people had reported hearing old-timey music. While roving around, they hear the music themselves and are sucked into a time rift, finding themselves in a scene from 1941, of soldiers dancing and local gals doing their part to keep up morale. There they meet a number of eager young fellas, but none as handsome or as intriguing as one Captain Jack Harkness, whom our Captain Jack is instantly drawn to - no surprise there: He was strikingly handsome, with chiseled features, dark hair and expressive eyes. (Sound like anyone else we know?) Our Captain Jack finally explains to Tosh that he had in fact assumed the original Captain Jack's name after the original was killed and he needed an identity to go under cover. But, as our Captain Jack put it, he didn't realize how hot the man who's name he'd stolen really was. The chemistry between the original Captain Jack and our Captain Jack is palpable, although our Captain Jack keeps insisting that the original go and kiss his girl goodbye, despite lots of evidence that he really didn't want to. There's a brief moment of hand-holding, and finally, the original Captain Jack pulls our Captain Jack onto the dance floor, with everyone standing around staring - and they finally kiss, Jack's first real smooch of the season. How fitting that he would sort of fall in love with himself. Meanwhile, Tosh is trying to get them back to their own time by leaving a record of her equations behind for the gang to find, but her efforts keep being thwarted by the mysterious Bilis Manger, the Ritz's manager, who clearly knows more about the time rift - and Torchwood - than he's letting on. This man, like our Captain Jack, looks like the same man he was 60 years ago. Jack and Tosh were eventually saved by Owen's rash decision to forcefully open the time rift with a machine they had in the lab - but he was only able to do so with the missing piece of the machine, which he just happens to find in Bilis' office (coincidence? I think not). Owen, who has apparently taken to sleeping at the office now, has a knock-down, drag-out fight with Ianto, in which they lambaste each other for their romantic foibles (Ianto's love for his cyber-Lisa, and Owen's for the anachronistic Diane). It actually comes down to Ianto shooting Owen in the shoulder, though Owen manages to get the rift machine working before collapsing from his wound. (And then poor Owen has to patch him self up - I guess that comes with the territory of being the team doctor.) Oh, and when Owen and Gwen cross paths briefly at the Ritz, they are positively chilly with each other. Guess that romance - or whatever it was - is done for good. The success of this episode was in no small part due to the remarkable charisma and irresistible screen presence of John Barrowman as Captain Jack. Looks like next week's season-ender picks up where this story left off, with more on the mysterious Bilis and the consequences of Owen's decision to open a time rift.
