Season 1, Episode 3 Inheritors of the Faith; Rise Up and Call Their Names

First Aired: June 26, 2003

The series concludes by exploring Islam among African-Americans and following members of the Interfaith Pilgrimage of the Middle Passage on their 1998-99 trek retracing the slave journey from West Africa. In the first hour, the history of Islam is told from the perspective of Imam W. Deen Mohammed, the son of long-time Nation of Islam leader Elijah Mohammed (who broke with NOI in the late 1970s). Then, pilgrims (black and white) recall the rigors of their yearlong trek, much of which was on foot. Despite painful reflections, racial tensions and exhaustion, the pilgrims “saw how the power of faith transforms lives,” says narrator Lorraine Toussaint.
