Thintervention Episode Recap: "Big Fat Liar" Season 1, Episode 5

In this week's episode of Thintervention, celebrity fitness trainer Jackie Warner suspects her clients are lying about their commitment to her plan — and goes to extremes to prove it. Their food and workout logs, it seems, simply don't gel with their results — an average loss of only two or three pounds a week. Meanwhile Nikki, an expat from Australia working as a life advisor in L.A., continues to enjoy her cocktails; and Mandy, a former professional cheerleader, revs up the team with some steamed goodies.

Hi, I'm Rasika, and I've decided to start covering Bravo's new weight-loss show because of my own interest in health and wellness. What's unique about Thintervention is that Jackie works with the cast in their everyday lives. There's no special camp. By training her clients to eat and exercise in their typical surroundings, she hopes they won't face the common problem of regaining weight.

Weekly "extreme workouts" and surprise check-ins are designed to keep everyone on track, but this less-controlled environment certainly has it challenges — especially since this can be an indulgent group. One of the cast members is a former star of The Real Housewives of Orange County. You get the idea.

The episode begins with Jackie telling viewers she sniffs a bit of dishonesty in the air. She's going to have to confront the clients, but ... fitness first! Before she goes into full Miss Marple mode, she shows the group how to work out despite injuries. A couple of folks have leg issues, so today's focus will be on arms. During the "up downs," Nikki moans. She hates this so much. Joe, an event producer and international businessman, whines about not getting enough attention.

Buck up, Joe, your time will come!

The workout concludes with a few quick tips on healthy eating, which basically boil down to consuming a reduced-fat slice of deli meat every three hours. Yum!

In the next scene, Jackie, now ready for some hardcore sleuthing, sneaks up the backstairs to Nikki's bedroom. Creepy! But Nikki seems more annoyed than uneasy, and follows her downstairs for dinner — roasted chicken, wild rice, and veggies, all provided by J.

Jackie asks what Nikki would have eaten if she hadn't showed up. Pork tenderloin and "that thing," she replies, pointing to a yam. Not bad!

Jackie tries to visit again the next day, but Nikki has either learned to lock her door or changed her locks, because Jackie can't get in. There will be no surprise visits today.

Thankfully, Joe is here! He'll be happy to see her. Sort of. He's in the middle of renovating a house. We quickly glimpse a guy working on a funky spray-painted mural of Hollywood, and although reluctant to leave this odd project, Joe recognizes that now's his shot to get the attention he's been craving.

They end up going to the park for a workout in the rain and invite the other contestants to join them. (At this point, I can't help but notice that Jackie looks a little too skinny. Does anyone else agree?) Jeana, the former Real Housewives of Orange County star, and Mandy, the former professional cheerleader, show up, and Jackie asks Bryan, an L.A. actor and independent film producer, to track down Nikki. She, in true thirsty-Aussie form, is having drinks in West Hollywood.  He finds her and they talk in a café by the bar.

"I got a vodka next door. I'm going back to it. I'd love for you to join us," she says. Wow.

Apparently working out in the rain was the easy workout. The extreme workout is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in the mountains. "If you want to throw up, there's a red bucket over there," says the guest instructor, Eddie Millis.

The clients grapple, grapple, grapple (works out every muscle group!) and punch, punch, punch.

Bryan, who is gay and lives with his partner of seven years in L.A., comments that this workout is "gayer than a Sunday in Miami." Then he freaks out, and at the weekly therapy session confesses that the reason for it was that the instructor reminded him of the testosterone-charged boys who bashed him in high school. I feel bad for laughing at him earlier.

After the workout, Mandy has everyone over for an assortment of steamed foods. They all pick on Stacy, a single actress, singer, and stand-up comedian whom they're trying to set up on a blind date.

Nikki asks how long Stacy's last relationship was. "About three months," she says. Nikki, always the sweetheart, asks: "So what happened then? Did you start talking?"

Chuckles around the couch, and Stacy, who if she isn't already depressed soon will be, takes all the abuse.

Like all weight-loss shows, this one concludes with the weigh-in. (Though the clients are spared from wearing silly outfits.) Joe has lost three pounds, Mandy four, and Bryan six. Good job!

Shannon, a college student whose mom is a former client of Jackie's, has lost three pounds. Stacy has lost only one pound. Jeana has gained a pound, and Nikki two!

Jackie once again asks the contestants to come clean about whether they're cheating, but no one fesses up.  She says she "clearly needs to go to extreme measures," and out comes a guy dressed like a plumber. But instead of a toolbox, he's carrying a lie detector machine. Game on!

Every time Jeana answers yes to the question, "Are you telling only the truth?" the needle points to fail. Stacy, who minutes before ripped Jackie for accusing her of lying, is indeed lying, according to the machine. It turns out she's been downing multiple clumpy, purple protein shakes instead of just one. And Nikki, it seems, drinks at least 22 cocktails a week! Someone please help this woman.

Thank goodness for Mandy. She invites Nikki to live with her for a week and help her find her way. Bryan makes the same offer to Jeana. The girls accept, and poor Stacy and Shannon are left to fend for themselves. C'mon, Joe! Where's the love?
