DirecTV Has Eyes for The Nine and Other Snubbed Series

The Nine

If you're a Tim Daly fan, or if you love Leverage in part because it seems vaguely familiar, there are good times ahead.

DirecTV has inked a deal to broadcast the short-lived TV series Eyes, Smith and The Nine — unaired episodes and all.

A Ray Liotta-fronted drama about an all-star ensemble of master thieves, Smith served up just three episodes during its original CBS run. But starting April 8, DirecTV's 101 Network will unspool all seven produced episodes, airing ... read more

Private Practice's Tim Daly Does Not Prescribe Desk Sex

Tim Daly, Private Practice

On ABC's Private Practice last week, new light was shed on Oceanside Wellness' alternative-medicine man when former flame Meg popped back into his life. (They quickly picked up where they left off... right there, in his office.) What other surprises does Pete have for us? Tim Daly teases what's to come, as well as shares a cautionary tale about the perils of desk sex. (Private Practice airs Wednesdays at 9 pm/ET.)

TVGuide.com: I have to say, it's good to see Pete doing something with another woman these days, instead of working the Addison thing so intently.
Tim Daly:
The Addison thing, it just seemed unrealistic to me. They're adults, so if they're not going to get it on, move on. When you reach a certain age and two people are attracted to one another, it's like, "This ain't high school, so what's the impediment? Let's ... read more

A New Lease on Life

Sarah Shahi and Damian Lewis in Life by Trae Patton/NBC Photo

I’m still not convinced that NBC’s Life is a great series, but tonight’s episode (Nov. 13) is the best I’ve seen to date of a show that has toned down some of the elements that irritated me when it premiered. Detective Charlie Crews (the charismatic Damian Lewis), who is still trying to unravel the circumstances of the unjust murder conviction that kept him behind bars for 12 years, remains something of an acquired taste. But he is indulging his quirks (spouting Zen aphorisms, munching fruit) with far fewer mannerisms. There’s not quite as much of the aren’t-I-just-adorable mugging that turned me off in the first episodes. It helps that tonight’s case is a doozy, involving a corpse that would make TV’s various CSI teams do a double-take. Crews and his typically skeptical partner Dani Reese (nicely underplayed by Sarah Shahi) are called to a house that’s nearly as empty as Crews’ own mansion — his settlement after his release earn... read more

Heroes Preview: Dana Davis' Monica Is One Cool (Copy)cat!

Dana Davis, Heroes

Yes, some of the many (many) Heroes newbies aren't quite yet dazzling us with their different-ness. But Dana Davis' Monica, introduced last week, perhaps boasts one of the coolest powers of the season: By merely witnessing an actor or talent, she can mimic it near-instantly. TVGuide.com invited the alumna of ABC's tragically truncated The Nine to preview what's to come for her plucky New Orleans heroine. TVGuide.com: Having done the short-lived The Nine and Point Pleasant, were you nervous about joining an established hit/phenomenon like Heroes? Davis: Yes, I was! I mean, I sort of compare it to being a high-school senior in your second semester and having to switch schools. It was so un read more

The Push Worked for Daisies

Kristin Chenowith in Pushing Daisies by Scott Garfield/ABC

The early ratings are in, and it looks like the combination of aggressive promotion and laudatory media buzz paid off for the first round of ABC’s delightful Pushing Daisies, which handily won its time period Wednesday and is off to a solid start. Honestly, though, if any of the reality alternatives had prevailed (especially CBS’s snooze-inducing Kid Nation and the is-that-still-on stupid briefcase show over on NBC), I think I’d be wearing a black armband in to work for the rest of the season. I’m dying to see a second episode of Daisies, and am trying to pretend I’m not worried that ABC hasn’t supplied one yet. (A year ago, I was dazzled by the pilot of The Nine, an episode the series never again lived up to.) Still, after watching an opening hour as filled with wonder and whimsy as Daisies’ pilot (or “Pielette,” as the episode was titled), how can anyone express anything but hope?My other top Wednesday night priority was seeing how Priv... read more

Private Practice Preview: Great Expectations Scare Tim Daly

Tim Daly, Private Practice

ABC's Private Practice premieres in three days. TVGuide.com is counting down to the Grey's spin-off's arrival with daily cast-member Q&As. Women across the country swooned when Pete Wilder planted a wet one on Addison last season. Now the good doc is flirting up a storm with America's favorite redhead as a hunky herbalist on Private Practice. We caught up with actor Tim Daly on a rare day off from the Oceanside Wellness Group. Here, he reveals the real reason ABC cancelled The Nine, why he adores Kate Walsh and where he'll be when his new show finally premieres. TVGuide.com: Private Practice is the antithesis of The Nine. What attracted you to it?Tim Daly: You know, what really attracted me to it was Shonda. The writing on The Nine was very risky. This may be a little less risky in terms of the storytelling but the characters and the dialogue are so fresh. Shonda does such an amaz read more

24 Plus Nine Star and D.C. Setting Equals...?

John Billingsley by Craig Sjodin/ABC

John Billingsley, formerly of The Nine as well as Fox's own Prison Break, has been added to the Season 7 cast of 24 in the recurring role of "Latham." No other details on the character have been disclosed, however. Also, says the Reporter, Jeffrey Nordling (a recurring player on Dirt) has landed a series-regular gig on 24 as an FBI agent named Larry. The coming season of 24 will largely be set in Washington, D.C., says the trade.PS to fans of The Nine: If the season/series finale, which broke online Thursday, left you with burning questions, share them in my Trivial Matt'rs blog. read more

Fans of The Nine: Got Burning Questions?

The "final" episode of ABC's The Nine was scheduled to break online Thursday, Aug. 30 (at ABC.com). If the non-finale finale left you with with any "burning questions" about the serialized drama — and I have to think it did — share them here and I may, just may, be able to track down the closure you crave. read more

Did anyone out there in TV ...

Question: Did anyone out there in TV land watch the Spike TV miniseries The Kill Point? I loved it and was hoping there would be talk about it but can't find anything. I guess I'm the only one who saw it! Answer: Blame the busiest summer in TV history for this enjoyable thriller getting lost in the shuffle. If it helps ease your mind, it didn't go entirely unnoticed: I gave it a short rave review upon its premiere and included it in a recent Dispatch roundup of summer finales. If it's released on DVD, which I imagine it will be, I highly recommend it, despite a little sagging in the middle. John Leguizamo and Donnie Wahlberg were terrific as the lead hostage-taker and lead negotiator in this bank-robbery standoff, which almost make up for what happened to The Nine ... read more

Finales: Big Love, Army Wives, Kill Point

Bill Paxton and Jeanne Tripplehorn in Big Love by Lacey Terrell/HBO

Sundays are seldom as busy during the regular TV season as was the case this weekend, with season and series finales all over cable. So much for summer being the sleepy season. If you'd been watching any of these shows this summer, you wouldn't have wanted to miss the payoffs.Big Love: So much drama and trauma on HBO's increasingly addictive domestic melodrama about a family man and the three wives who alternately adore and tolerate his whims, schemes and transgressions. One reason I love the show is that it has lines of dialogue you could never hear anywhere else. Here’s Nicky: “Our husband’s dating life is none of our business.” Bill to Barb: “There are two other people in this marriage.” Bill to Margene: “You are not having the neighbor’s baby!” Barb to Bill: “I don’t want a fourth [wife].” Margene: “Boss lady outed us to the neighbors!”So twisted, and yet presented in such a way that it almost seems normal. Th... read more
