The X Factor Finals: Did Chris Outperform Melanie and Josh? Season 1, Episode 25

Congratulations, X Factor fans! We've made it to the final stretch ... What are we all going to do on Wednesday and Thursday nights from now on?

The final three contestants arrive on stage and at this point, they've been so made over, they're nearly unrecognizable.

Josh Krajcik starts out the evening by performing Alanis Morissette's "Uninvited," and it's pretty bland ... until Alanis herself joins him on stage! They appear to be traveling on a winding road in some sort of silver forest. It becomes a bit distracting, but overall the Alanis/Josh pairing is a pretty solid one. "That was surreal. It was such a natural pairing for you," says L.A. Reid. "You seemed right at home. We just started at the top. That was great."

Singing Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" is Chris Rene. And guess who joins him? Avril! She's a woman of consistency, that's for sure — not only has she looked the same for the past 10 years, but every single song she's released over the past 10 years sounds the same too! This is not Rene's shining moment. It's shaky, and we can hear the pitchiness in his voice. He does his usual rap thing, but there's nothing fantastic about it. "It's not about note for note being perfect," says Paula Abdul. "It's about an energy that connects with the audience. What a wonderful, current, feel-good performance."

Now the question on everybody's mind: Will Mariah Carey join Melanie Amaro? No! But R. Kelly will! They have been digging R. Kelly on the Factor these days. When he comes out on stage he looks ... bloated? Oh well. Either way, "I Believe I Can Fly" is probably the best performance of the evening. Which isn't saying a lot, because no one has really blown me away yet.  Nicole Scherzinger says: "She did the best that she could in that key. She put 1,000% into that performance."

We're about at the halfway point when 20 robots wearing digital-flashing dollar signs take over the stage. Michael Jackson's "They Don't Care About Us" plays in the background, and then the robots are joined by Melanie, Chris and Josh. It is unclear whether or not they even sing, but Steve Jones tells them they were wonderful anyway.

We're back! And Josh starts off the final round with a bang — Etta James' "At Last." With the addition of the guitar, and Josh's raspy sound, it's a unique rendition. He definitely looked a bit possessed at certain points, but I think we've grown to love that about him. It's how we can tell he's feeling it. This was a solid song for Josh to go out with. "I've got to hand it to you. This is what we call the $5 million song," says Simon Cowell. "This is going to be a very close call tonight." It's Krajcik Magic! (Or so says Nicole).

Chris takes us back to his first audition during his last performance, with his original song "Young Homie." It's his best performance to date. He's totally in his element, the fans are already singing the words of the song, and his excitement is contagious. "You are magic! You are the consummate singer, songwriter, performer. You make everyone fall in love with you," says Paula.

Melanie takes it home with Beyonce's "Listen." It was so incredible, I almost don't have the words to describe it here. As with Chris, I think this was her best performance. It was powerful, emotional and uplifting ... and she undoubtedly put Beyonce to shame. "That is the Melanie that I love. That wasn't a $5 million performance. That was $50 million performance," L.A. says.

This decision is going to be way harder than anticipated after these final three performances.

So what did you think? Who was the best, and who do you think will win? Let us know in the comments!
