After Monday's live performances on The Voice, America had it so easy. Save Tony Lucca (who already survived Christina's bullets last night), Juliet, Mathai and Jamar and throw everyone else into the fire. That's right, we don't need any saves this week. We don't even need a third singer for each team! But did the viewers actually do the right thing? Or did they get distracted by the half-naked Egyptian dancers and the Adele look-alikes? Let's skip over that Jessie J. performance and get right to the results:
Team Adam learns their fate first:
Safe: Mathai, Tony Lucca and Pip
Team Cee Lo is next:
Safe: Juliet Simms, Jamar Rogers and James Massone
Which means the remaining singers now have to perform (even though they just should all go home now). Kidding! Kind of. Actually, not at all.
Kim Yarbrough, "Spotlight"
Why couldn't Kim have just performed this yesterday? Her voice sounds great, as always. Even though she stands a little too much in one place, she puts her emotions into the tune from start to finish. Of all three singers on the chopping block for Adam's team, she is definitely the strongest and this just proved that.
Karla Davis, "I Can't Make You Love Me"
It's too little, too late with Karla. She picks another dud of a song, and finally learns to project a little, but she's pitchy on two of the few notes that she does project. I'll be very surprised if she gets Adam's vote even though he appears to really feel the performance with his closed eyes.
Katrina Parker, "Don't Speak"
Again, why didn't Katrina pick this song yesterday instead of butchering The Smashing Pumpkins with that awkward string quartet? Unlike with "Tonight, Tonight," however, she really doesn't stray far from the original version, but this song gives her vocals a lot more life and helps break her out of that pesky Adele label everyone seems so eager to use. Maybe this is her fight to lose after all?
Decision time: Blake, Christina and Cee Lo all agree Katrina delivered the best — and most urgent — performance. Adam concurs and saves her, sending home Kim and Karla.
Now Cee Lo's singers take the stage:
Tony Vincent, "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)"
Tony immediately seems more at ease than he did last night since a) he is not on a giant moving podium and b) he doesn't have to deal with those annoying dancers. However, if urgency is something the judges are looking for, they're not going to find it here.
Chessa, "All By Myself"
She starts out well enough and shows a surprising amount of control, but that is quickly thrown out the window and with it — any semblance of good tone. She still might be the strongest of the three, but with this bunch, that is not saying much.
Erin Martin, "Your Song"
I'm so over Erin after her lifeless, superficial "performance" from last night that I can't muster up any energy to get excited for Miss Cleopatra. Oh and hey whaddya know? She hits many, many bad notes and kisses goodbye any chance of getting that life preserver.
Decision time: Adam is ticked off that it took so long for Cee Lo's contestants to sing for their lives and actually do well, and picks Chessa. Blake agrees. Cee Lo says his mind says Tony, but his heart says Chessa, so Chessa it is. This is the end of the road for Tony Vincent and Erin Martin (thank goodness).
