The Voice Episode Recap: Mathai Goes Country and Christina Continues to Hate Tony Lucca Season 2, Episode 17

Adam says he's received death threats and had several people try to take his life since he cut fan favorite Pip on Monday's show. "I'm very sad about that," he says half-jokingly. However, Adam quickly gets down to brass tacks and seems torn about whom he is going to have to choose between even before America's save is announced. Now a quick performance from Florence + the Machine and onto the results...

Team Adam:

America's save is — no surprise — Tony Lucca! Was there ever a doubt in anyone's mind that it wouldn't be him? Either way, it's now Katrina Parker vs. Mathai for who gets Adam's save.

Mathai, "Cowboy Casanova"
Why did Mathai pick a country song now of all times? Tonight is when she needs to be her absolute best and pick a song to show off her best assets and this Carrie Underwood hit is not the song for her. Not by a long shot. She's pitchy a lot at the beginning, and if people thought she didn't connect with the song last night, they're going to be really disappointed with this. Blake liked seeing Mathai embrace her country side, but Christina could feel the nerves.

Katrina Parker, "Perfect"
See? Mathai could learn a thing or two from Katrina. This Pink ballad is very much in her wheelhouse and shows off her vocal strengths very similarly to the way "Jar of Hearts" did on Monday. She also connects with this song a lot more than Mathai did with hers. Hands down, Katrina won that battle. Blake says Katrina is the best singer on Adam's team, and Christina agrees and says she's most excited to hear original tunes from Katrina (not saying much since Christina has made her hatred for Tony so well known already).

Decision time: Blake and Cee Lo both say they would save Mathai. Adam goes on and on (and on and on), but basically says he was waiting for Mathai to explode, but she didn't. Katrina Parker is saved, and Mathai is sent packing.

Team Cee Lo:

Things are a little less clear on Team Cee Lo. The save should go to Juliet Simms, but Jamar Rogers had a breakout moment last night. And Cheesa sang an extremely popular tune. Turns out the save goes to Jamar Rogers, pitting Juliet against Cheesa for the last pick. Is this another instance of American Idol's big voting problem, where all the young girls voting for the cute boys and ignoring the talented girls? Obviously Tony and Jamar both deserve to stay, no question, but it's weird that it's all girls singing for their lives tonight, no?

Cheesa, "Already Gone"
It's hard to top Cheesa's moving "I Have Nothing" performance from Monday — even for Cheesa herself. However, she does the right thing and picks another slower song. However, her emotion is nowhere near where it was last night and the song just kind of glides along. Blake says the song was kind of flat, and Christina says she was a hair under the pitch throughout most of the song.

Juliet Simms, "Torn"
Even before she opens her mouth to sing, this sounds like a really good song choice for Juliet. Unfortunately, I really don't love the first verse where she sounds incredibly nasaly and not nearly as powerful as usual. Once she gets into the chorus, she's back to her normal rocker self, but just that weak beginning might make this Juliet's worst performance. She set the bar extremely high for herself from early on. Blake professes his love for Juliet. Christina says she doesn't like Juliet's softer voice (agreed!) and she wants her to do another "Roxanne"-esque song.

Decision time: It becomes pretty clear pretty quickly that unless Juliet had totally bombed tonight — which she didn't — she is the one getting the save. Blake votes for her. Christina votes for her. Finally, after much hemming and hawing of his own, Cee Lo picks Juliet Simms, effectively booting Cheesa.
