After the reading her diary, Helen tells Gilbert to leave her because she is not free to marry. He complies and learns that she returned to Grassdale upon learning that Arthur is gravely ill. Helen cannot comfort him and he rejects responsibility for his actions. A year passes. Gilbert goes to Grassdale, and discovers that Helen is now wealthy and lives at her estate in Staningley.
Helen has provided Gilbert with her diary when he accuses her of loving Lawrence. He uncovers her past marriage to a selfish and manipulating man named Arthur Huntingdon. Huntingdon's friends frequently engage in drunken revels at the family's home while the brother of Helen's friend, vies for her affections. Arthur encouragement to drink and swear at-- is the last straw for Helen.
Mrs. Helen Graham arrives at Wildfell Hall, a nearby old mansion. A source of curiosity for the small community, the reticent Helen and her young son Arthur are slowly drawn into the social circles of the village. With gossip flying, Gilbert Markham is led to believe that his friend, Mr. Lawrence is courting Mrs. Graham. At a chance meeting, a jealous Gilbert assaults Lawrence.
Huntingdon has abducted young Arthur and with news of her husband’s illness, Helen returns to him. In spite of his dissolute behavior, she nurses him; for better or worse. Will faithful Gilbert Markham ever see her again?
