The Simpsons Episode Recap: "Boy meets Curl" Season 21, Episode 12

Main Story:

Homer and Marge are getting ready for their date night, but due to a leak at the power-plant, Homer misses dinner. Homer and Marge decide to go to the movies, but it is soon ruined by all the other theater participants and the movie's leading actor Ben Affleck. On their way home they pass an ice rink and decide to give it a shot. The rink is closed for curling training. The Simpsons give it a whirl and are naturals at it. The Springfield Curling club is invited to the 2010 Winter Olympics trials as a demonstration sport. With a great performance by Marge, the Springfield Curlers are going to Vancouver (i.e. the warmest city in Canada).

Homer is bringing down the team and Agnes wants him out. Marge doesn't want to give up on Homer since they began curling together and so she has to work even harder to make up the slack for him. Marge hurts her right shoulder and is told by Dr. Hibbert that she no longer can curl.

Homer discovers that Marge has actually been left-handed this whole time and she enters the curling match. Marge conquers the game and the USA wins the Olympic gold medal.

Side story:

Lisa starts to collect Olympic pins and it becomes an obsession. The obsession becomes so intense that Lisa has to trade in her pearls and play music on the sidewalk for spare change. Bart intervenes and helps Lisa get her pearls back.

Funny Stuff we Noticed:

  • Lisa saying that without her pearls she just a big Maggie
  • Canadian dove, the beaver
  • Canadian Milhoose
  • Agnes' story of why she is so mean to Seymour — because when he was in her tummy he kicked at the exact moment Agnes was making her pole vault and his kick caused her to trip the bar

Premise: Matt Groening's subversive, animated satire about Springfield's hapless first family became a cult favorite when it premiered on Fox in 1989 after first being seen in 1987 as a short on 'The Tracey Ullman Show.' That was then; now it's TV longest running comedy. Not since 'The Flintstones' in the '60s has a cartoon series drawn such a large adult audience, and, ay caramba, given us pop-culture expressions for the ages. And in 1999, Time magazine called it the best TV show of the 20th century.
