Katharine McPhee

Question: I watched the first episode of Smash this week and I enjoyed it. I like the cast, the music and the dancing, and the overall "Broadway" feel of the show. I just can't find myself going along with what is apparently the central idea of the show, which is that Katharine McPhee would make a better Marilyn than Megan Hilty. Really? Don't get me wrong, I love ...

Ratings: The River Runs Weakly; NCIS Sustains Strong Numbers with 200th Episode

Joe Anderson, Paulina Gaitan

ABC's thriller The River debuted to much weaker numbers than several of the network's other drama premieres earlier this season (and a couple of them got canceled). Still, it fared better for the network than any program in its time slot since the autumn ending of Dancing with the Stars.

The season's top show, NCIS, marked its 200th show with another big audience, while also trumping Fox's Glee in the coveted adults-18-to-49 demographic. The CBS ratings stalwart didn't set a series record, however.

Tuesday TV in Review: A Thrill Ride Down ABC's River, Justified, Southland

Joe Anderson

If the notion of getting "Lost in the Amazon" and finding yourself in a weekly horror movie has any appeal, then by all means set your compass for ABC's The River, the most exciting thing to happen to TV's midseason since, well, Monday's premiere of Smash on NBC. If Smash is a show-stopper, The River is a terrifying heart-stopper, a cleverly cinematic supernatural adventure that takes us on a wild ride into an exotic heart of darkness. (It opens with back-to-back episodes Tuesday at 9/8c, and the second hour is even scarier than the first.)

Ask Matt: Once Upon a Time, Pilot Season, Luck and HBO, Revenge and More

Josh Dallas, Ginnifer Goodwin

Question: I've been watching Once Upon A Time from the beginning, and I thought by now, we'd start to see some real movement towards the present-day fairy-tale folks realizing that something was amiss. But it seems to be dragging and dragging, and while the "fairy tale" portions are fun to watch, there's nothing there that gives one hope that finally, someone other than Henry knows something's amiss. It's getting boring. Any tidbits as to when that ...

Ask Matt: Downton Abbey's Meanies, Remakes, Touch, Grey's Anatomy and More!

Question: I'm one of the last people one would expect to watch Downton Abbey, but after hearing the endless raves about it, I made it through the first season on DVD during a weekend, and a new episode is now one of the highlights of my TV-watching week. However, my question is about the "mean girls" (i.e. Thomas and Miss O'Brien). Sure, it's always fun to have a couple of mustache-twirling villains to root against, but unless I missed something, I guess they're supposed to be bad just for the sake of being bad. read more

Wednesday TV in Review: Get Touch-ed, a CSI Farewell, Face Off and More

David Mazouz and Kiefer Sutherland

This mid-season, we're being asked repeatedly to take giant leaps of faith with shows that dare to be different, that refuse to settle for the same old TV formulas, despite all of the risk that entails. Risk is the operating principal behind shows like NBC's Smash (Feb. 6), a dazzling but dauntingly inside (theater) baseball look at the making of a Broadway musical. Ditto ABC's The River (Feb. 7), a terrifying supernatural quest into an exotic heart of darkness in the Amazon jungle that's not for the faint-hearted. Later in the season, not yet scheduled, NBC will offer up Awake, a gripping but grim psychological drama about a grieving man trapped between two possible dream worlds.
