Binge Saturday: The Returned

Yara Pilartz

A&E is developing an Americanized version of the French series Les Revenants (The Returned) — but we strongly recommend that you check out the original first.

Set in a small French village, the show chronicles a group of people whose lives are turned upside-down when their loved ones start coming back from the dead. Among the most heartbreaking storylines: Camille, a girl who died in a bus crash four years prior, is stuck at age 15 even though her twin sister Lena is now 19; and Simon, a groom who dies just before his wedding, only to come back and discover that his fiancée and her new husband are raising his daughter.

Weekend TV: LEGO My Simpsons, Resurrection Finale

The Simpsons

Oh, snap! After 25 seasons, Fox's The Simpsons can still seem as fresh and inventive as when we first met this merrily mutant family — especially when the show raises its game as it does for this weekend's milestone 550th (!) episode (Sunday, 8/7c), a fantastical collaboration with LEGO in which all the elements of visuals, story and jokes click into place with spectacular results.

Weekend TV Review: Bountiful, Resurrection, Cosmos

Cicely Tyson

Just try telling Carrie Watts that you can't go home again. This elderly Texan, determined to make her way back to a town that time and everyone but she has forgot, bristles with restless gumption, fueled by an indomitable spirit that erupts in hymns she can't stop humming — or singing, as in a memorable scene set in a deserted bus station after midnight.

On Broadway, where Cicely Tyson won a Tony Award last year for her luminous performance as Carrie in a revival of The Trip to Bountiful, audiences often joined in as she sang "Blessed Assurance" in the play's rapturous high point. And for a moment, in Lifetime's languid movie adaptation (Saturday, 8/7c), you might find your own living room transformed into a choir loft.

Resurrection Bosses: The Dead's Return Is Not About "Why," But "What If?"

Landon Gimenez and Omar Epps

ABC's Resurrection sees dead people come alive again, but it's not related to The Returned. Except it is.

The drama, which premieres Sunday at 9/8c, is based on Jason Mott's best-selling book The Returned about people who come back from the dead. That's not to be confused with the critically acclaimed, similarly themed French series on Sundance Channel, The Returned, which is based on the French film Les Revenants and is being adapted by Lost's Carlton Cuse for A&E, or the fact that Resurrection refers to its walking dead as The Returned.

Winter TV: Must-watch new shows

"It is kind of confusing, we'll admit that," Resurrection executive producer Michele Fazekas tells TVGuide.com with a laugh. "But even though the premise is the same, I think we all have different takes on it and different stories."

Set in Arcadia, Mo., Resurrection follows Jacob (Landon Gimenez), a dead 8-year-old boy who wakes up in a rice paddy field in rural China. With the help of immigration ...

Matt Roush's Top 10 of 2013

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul

1. Breaking Bad
What a way to go out — with a bang, on a tragic yet triumphant high, at the peak of popularity and notoriety. What could be more satisfying than that? There wasn't a wasted moment or unexplored opportunity for suspenseful conflict in the intense last chapters of AMC's masterful thriller, charting Walter White's ultimate descent into criminal infamy. Bryan Cranston brilliantly captured the character's mood swings, from wounded pride to murderous rage to sorrow over the family he lost due to his dark machinations. No maddening ambiguities in this grand finale... read more
