Price Is Right on CBS

1972, TV Show

Bob Barker Has No Say in His Rightful Heir

Will it be George? Mark? Jm. J Bullock? Whomever The Price Is Right decision-makers wind up tapping to fill Bob Barker's shoes, the retiring game show legend will have had no say in the matter. "I haven't asked to be involved, and they have not asked for my advice," he tells the Toronto Sun. Confirming that George Hamilton got a look-see, as well as (yeah, you would have to think) younger folk, Barker says at least one, undisclosed) name recently entered the mix. But it's not Rosie's. "[She] wants the show," Barker notes, "but I don't think they're considering a woman."As for who will inherit his pet population-controlling sign-off, Barker hopes that another daytime fave, Dr. Phil, will grab the baton — though he wasn't the first choice. "When Katie Couric was trying to figure out how to end [her Evening Newscasts], I told her how," he shares. "But, uh, she turned me down." read more

Report: Bob Barker Thinks Rosie Isn't Right for Price

Bob Barker by Tony Esparza/CBS; Rosie O'Donnell by Donna Svennevik/ABC

Among the rumblings regarding Rosie O'Donnell's après-View plans is that she might front a game show — and that she's particularly hot to take over The Price Is Right. Bob Barker, though, apparently would sooner encourage unprotected sex amongst cats and dogs than have his Johnston & Murphys filled by the egregious gabber. A source tells the New York Daily News that while TPIR execs are lukewarm about George Hamilton, Mark Steines and Todd Newton (the finalists in the hosting derby), Barker "is adamant that Rosie not get the gig." Perhaps afraid the show's catchphrase might become, "Susie Derkins, come on out"? read more

Sources tell the Hollywood Reporter that with several contenders now dropped from consideration, The Price Is Right has narrowed the field of Bob Barker replacements down to three: Entertainment Tonight cohost Mark Steines, actor George Hamilton and journeyman game-show host Todd Newton. CBS is expected to reveal the actual replacement host at its mid-May upfront presentation.Who of the three finalists is your pick? Vote here. read more

ET Host and Mario Lopez Join Price Is Right Possibilities

Break out the high-test bronzer, George Hamilton, because you've got new competition. On the heels of talk that Hamilton had the inside line on succeeding Bob Barker as host of The Price Is Right comes reportage that Entertainment Tonight cohost Mark Steines and Saved by the Bell's Mario Lopez are now in the mix. Audition tapes of all the top contenders — including John O'Hurley (what's with all the Dancing with the Stars dropouts?) and former Beauty and the Geek host Mike Richards — are being shown to test audiences around the country. The wannabe who comes closest to meeting expectations without going over wins. read more

"The Actual SPF Is... ": George Hamilton to Host TPIR?

With Bob Barker set to get neutered retire in June, the latest buzz has the tannest man in Hollywood — onetime Dancing with the Stars hoofer George Hamilton — inheriting the Price Is Right hosting gig. According to, at least, CBS CEO Les Moonves and TPIR execs think the "wonderfully charming" Hamilton "could really make the show work." Yeah, because after a gagillion years on the air and atop the ratings, the show was a real mess. read more

Sunday, Monday...Happy Days

Thanksgiving is upon us, which means it's time to update my nightly viewing schedule. I record plenty of stuff, but these are the shows that I try to watch live.MONDAYS:8 pm/ET Deal or No Deal (NBC)As a student of Jeopardy! and The Price is Right, every logical fiber of my being tells me I should be repulsed by this brainless show. Yet I cannot stop watching, and actually look forward to it. Well done, Howie and crew.9 pm/ET Heroes (NBC)The only thing I'm tired of hearing is "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World." Can't wait to see how Peter gets a scar on his face.10 pm/ET CSI: Miami (CBS)I'll take Caruso's emoting over Sorkin's pontificating. TUESDAYS:8 pm/ET Friday Night Lights (NBC)Dancing with the Stars is gone and Idol is coming. In the meantime, I'll watch some fake football.9 pm/ET House (FOX)Great acting, good stories, and plenty of crotchetiness. Easily the best show of the night.10 pm/ET Nip/Tuck (FX)Yeah, it jumped the shark with the Carver, but it's still interesting to... read more

Is Price Right for Price Is Right?

The ink on Bob Barker's letter of resignation is barely dry, and already names are being bandied about for his ultimate successor as host of The Price Is Right. Somewhat fittingly, an early front-runner is The Early Show's Dave Price, who just last week signed a new contract with CBS that calls for him to do unspecified "entertainment-based projects." (Hmm.... ) A CBS rep shrugs off the talk, telling the New York Daily News, "You don't replace a legend overnight. Right now, we're focusing on honoring Bob," who will oversee all things Plinko- and yodeling-related until June 2007. read more

Bob Barker Is Ready to Step On Down

After 35 years of disclosing the "actual retail price," 50 years overall in television, and a bevy of Emmys, Bob Barker has announced that he is ready to step down as the host of CBS' long-running The Price Is Right. "I will be 83 years old on December 12," he tells the Associated Press, "and I've decided to retire while I'm still young." Barker, who has been pondering hanging up his microphone "for at least 10 years," admits that he's "reaching the age where the constant effort to be there and do the show physically is a lot for me. Better [to leave] a year too soon than a year too late." The silver-haired icon will host his final "Showcase Showdown" in June 2007, and even at this early point I can tell you that it will be grossly overpriced. I mean, $21,200 for a Jet Ski, a three-day trip to Rhode Island and a jukebox?! But seriously, folks... my college chums and I used to schedule classes around TPIR, and Bob, god bless his cat-spaying, dog-neutering soul, will be missed. read more
