Exclusive: What's In Store For the 40th Daytime Emmy Awards Show

We know who's been nominated. Now it's time to get some scoop on the 40th Annual Daytime Emmy show itself. TV Guide Magazine spoke with executive producer Gabriel Gornell and HLN executive vp and general manager Scot Safon about the ceremony, airing live on HLN from the Beverly Hilton Hotel (Sunday, June 16, 8/7c). Expect big changes.

"Last year we only had three weeks to prepare for the show but this time we have two months and that's going to make a vast difference in the way we honor daytime television," Safon says. "We were so heartened by what we achieved in such a small amount of time last year that we just knew we had to dream bigger. Our working theme for this year's ceremony is 'Past, Present and Future,' which will honor 40 years of the Daytime Emmys and 40 years of daytime television breakthroughs — the many ways daytime was there first, especially when it came to subject matter on the daytime dramas, talk shows and children's programming. It's an extraordinary legacy."

The Thursday Playlist: Hannibal, Parks X 2, Don't Rain on Glee's Parade

Could it be that NBC has produced a keeper in the deliciously creepy Hannibal? We shouldn't break out the proverbial Chianti just yet; the early returns have been modest, to put it mildly, but in this tough-for-NBC time period (Thursday, 10/9c) that the network once owned, it's looking better than it has lately (with an insta-dud like Do No Harm or the below-the-radar Rock Center). And the media buzz, while understandably mixed, is stronger than for most of the networks' midseason yawns. With repeats on the other networks this week, and featuring one of the show's most relentlessly unnerving chapters to date, this is as good a time as any to sample Hannibal's unsavory wares.

Premise: 'Come on down!' Contestants guess retail values for prizes on TV's longest-running game show. Bob Barker racked up over a dozen hosting Emmys since CBS first aired the daytime staple in 1972, though it originated with Bill Cullen on NBC (1956-63) and ABC (1963-65). However, it was the genial, ageless Barker who really sold viewers on the show, which spawned several syndicated offshoots and a string of prime-time specials. When Barker retired in 2007, Drew Carey stepped in to ably fill his shoes.
