Leonard Stern, Honeymooners and Get Smart Writer, Dies at 88

Leonard Stern, a producer, writer and director who helped create The Honeymooners and Mad Libs, died Tuesday of heart failure, Variety reports. He was 88 years old.

A New York native, Stern got his start in Hollywood in the '50s writing film screenplays, including Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion, The Jazz Singer and the Jack Lemmon film Three for the Show. His career shifted to TV, and he began writing for The Jackie Gleason Show.

Allan Melvin (Brady Bunch's Sam) Dead at 84

Allan Melvin, a popular character actor best recognized for his roles on The Phil Silvers Show (as Cpl. Henshaw), All in the Family (Archie's bud Barney) and The Brady Bunch (Sam the butcher), on Thursday died of cancer, reports the Los Angeles Times. He was 84.Melvin's 50-plus year career also included guest appearances on such TV shows as The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show and Gomer Pyle: U.S.M.C.; voicing Magilla Gorilla and Popeye's Bluto; and playing "Al the Plumber" in 15 years' worth of Liquid-Plumr commercials.Melvin is survived by his wife of 64 years, Amalia; a daughter, Jennifer Hanson; and a grandson. read more

Premise: The classic 1950s Nat Hiken service sitcom about unrivaled Army con artist Sgt. Ernie Bilko, head of the motor pool at Fort Baxter in Kansas. Originally titled `You'll Never Get Rich,' and later `Sergeant Bilko' in syndication, it won three consecutive Emmys for Best Comedy Series and two Emmys for Silvers, and had early appearances by Dick Van Dyke, Alan Alda and Fred Gwynne. Top writers who worked on the show included Neil Simon, Arnie Rosen, Coleman Jacoby, Tony Webster and Leonard Stern.
