Oprah's Grand Finale

James Frey, Oprah Winfrey

As a worshipful fan wearing a red cape and tiara brandishes a large sign that says farewell, oprah, the queen of talk, the object of her devotion is across the street on her Chicago set chanting in triumph, "Twenty-five years, twenty-five years, twenty-five years!"

It's eight episodes prior to the finale of The Oprah Winfrey Show and all 315 audience members are supercharged, knowing it's their last chance to attend a taping. Premise: A one-woman (one name, really) entertainment dynasty, and the gold standard in the talk-show genre, able to attract just about any guest, and so influential that her `book club' practically guaranteed that works she endorsed would be bestsellers. Smart and charismatic, the multi-Emmy winner is also self-effacing enough that, after copping the TV academy's Lifetime Achievement Award, she removed herself from more Emmy nods, noting, `after you've achieved it for a lifetime, what else is there?'
