The Office Episode Recap: "Secret Santa" Season 6, Episode 12

There aren't many ho-ho-hos at Dunder Mifflin when Phyllis and Michael square off for the honor of playing Santa at the office holiday party. Meanwhile, Dwight and Jim try to spread holiday cheer, despite the not-so-jolly uncertainty of the company.

Some things never change — yes, mediocrity remains king in the office as Dwight and Jim dramatically reveal the company Christmas tree; fake, undecorated and leaning to the left, it is anything but the most wonderful time of the year.

Secret Santa is in full swing in the office, and Andy has the love of his life, Erin, to buy for. He is getting her, quite literally, the 12 days of Christmas — and it is not going well; the animals are attacking each other and her. Her bandages tell the stories.

Phyllis arrives to the office dressed as Santa; this has been her dream, literally moving her to tears. But her excitement is soon trampled when Michael arrives in the same St. Nick attire! So the battle begins, between Michael and Phyllis, for the honor of playing Mr. Claus.

Strange things are happening with Oscar. He's distant, up in the clouds. What, exactly, is going on? Pam thinks he's fallen head over heels with one of the warehouse guys. Could it be true?

Phyllis is killing it in the Secret Santa competition. While Michael can't even stand Kevin sitting on his lap, Phyllis conducts an excellent (well, as excellent as possible) "official" tree lighting ceremony. Knowing that he is losing, Michael decides to change his identity and trump Phyllis; he is now Jesus Christ! And a judgmental Jesus Christ at that — judging all of the Secret Santa gifts that are handed out throughout the office.

Meanwhile, we discover that Matt is Oscar's office crush, and the two of them meet via an introduction by Pam. They are the only two gays she knows, and she's dead-set on setting them up...in the most altruistic of ways.

Later, Michael calls corporate to complain about the Santa/Jesus going-ons; however, everything quickly grows petty. Apparently, DM has a buyer and that means, once a sale goes through, there will be a "cleaning" of the "house." No one's job is safe! For the first time this episode, Michael is at a loss for words.

But, of course, minutes later, Michael relays the conversation to the entire office; pandemonium ensues. To quell their concerns, Michael calls corporate back — and corporate confirms that it's the workhorses, the office people, who are safe from firings; it's the executives who are being let go.

The party resumes. Karaoke is sung, gifts are given and sweet treats are consumed — even the local marching band visits in care of Andy!  Everyone gets exactly what they want and/or need (including Michael allowing Phyllis to be the official Santa), and all is right with the world once again!

What do you think? Are you pro or against office Christmas parties? Any wild memories? And what do you think about Secret Santa gift-giving in general? In the end, it worked out in this office! How about yours...?
