David learns the property Colin extorted from him is worthless---after promising to keep no more secrets from Max; Shelly takes advantage of Sam's housesitting job to get closer to Michael; Gennie awakens in a San Francisco hotel room---with Chapin; Colin's girlfriend catches Travis's eye.
As the family prepares for Gennie's charity masquerade ball, David confronts the friend who betrayed his secret to Colin Dowling, who intends to blackmail the Carvers with it. Also, Michael's fondness for Shelly irritates his father.
David is blackmailed by a maintenance man who claims David's grandfather paid him to keep a secret about a skiing mishap and expects David to honor the arrangement. Elsewhere, Shelly gives Michael snowboarding lessons; Gennie has to cochair a charity with a former white-collar criminal; and the resort's water pipes burst.
To counter Colin Dowling's scheme to hijack the Carvers' annual fair, David and Will mobilize their loyalists to stage a beach party at the resort; Sam broods over Shelly's sudden distance in the wake of their kiss; Max reconsiders her feelings for David after he misses their dinner date.
Will frantically tries to contact David on the eve of an important meeting with a bank loan officer, but there's a reason why David is incommunicado---he's been arrested. Moreover, he's reeling from Max's sudden confession. Also: the Dowlings take control of a local landmark.
