Nathan Miller, a recently divorced news reporter, looks forward to the single life until his parents' marital problems derail his plans. In the opener, Nathan's dad leaves his wife of 43 years, and she then decides to move in with Nathan, while his father moves in with Nathan's sister.
Carol insists that the family rearrange their positions in the Miller cemetery plot because of the two divorces. Nathan then tries to get ex-wife Janice to sign back her eternal resting space to the family.
Nathan, Debbie and Adam take Mikayla trick-or-treating on Halloween to a house where a witch is believed to live. Also: Nathan and Debbie are furious when they learn the truth about what really happened to their pet parrot when they were kids.
Carol's overbearing parents visit for Christmas. To avoid her mom's wrath, Carol gets Nate and Tom to cover-up their failed relationships and pretend to be happy. But Nate starts to believe the lie and considers getting back together with his ex-wife.
Nathan mimics one of his mother's incessant rants and is awarded his own news segment to complain on the air. Unfortunately, his own rants lack his mom's flair and fervor so he devises ways to keep her irritated in order to get new material.
Nathan asks Tom to spend the weekend with him in order to find something they have in common. Meanwhile, Carol stays with Mikayla when Debbie and Adam attend a vegetarian convention, and accidentally turns her upraising upside down.
Nathan relaxes on vacation in the Bahamas, until Carol makes a surprise, unwelcome visit. Meanwhile, Debbie gets upset with Adam when she learns that he used to write love songs for the special girls in his life when he was younger.
Nathan tries to secretly date his mom's dentist, after Carol adds the woman to the family's blacklist for charging her a hefty cancellation fee for being late to an appointment. Meanwhile, Carol desperately tries to get her money back; and Tom keeps waking up with gum stuck in his hair.
