The Living Edens 1997 | TV Show Watchlist

Season 1, Episode 13 Kamchatka: Siberia's Forbidden Wilderness

First Aired: May 10, 2000

Surveying the wildlife on this peninsula, which juts into the Bering Sea. To humans, it was “forbidden territory” during the Soviet era because it was home to a military base, notes narrator Linda Hunt. But the Soviets didn't keep out Russian bears. Or salmon, which is good news for hungry bears looking for a bellyful (15 fish a day) to tide them over for the winter. Up in the sky are stellar sea eagles, which weigh twice as much as American bald eagles, and puffins, which are awkward in the air but “truly fly” under water. That's not good news for fish.
