There are not many advantages to being single on Valentine's Day. This year, however, I got to spend time with the people I love most in this world: the Knights.
Bobby Cannavale was outrageous, but I'm thinking that because the episode was pretty much built around him, it didn't leave as much time for our ensemble. Maybe that was the problem. I love the banter between the six of them, and we didn't have nearly enough of it.
I wish Enrico had taken Eugene's advice to "have a nice time in the city. Make sure you get one of those
Sex in the City tours. Those chicks had crazy sexy bad mouths, huh?" Of course, in true
Sex and the City tradition, they did end up in a fabulous club, which allowed us to see the boys pull on even more new personalities. For me, the best was a toss-up between Louis inexplicably trying to sneak in with some Asian girls and Eugene's bizarre Russian Viktor who must have been channeling
Borat with his, "We are collaborating on new wodka drink for the black people! They love it!"
That's not to say Enrico was an also-ran in this episode. He had some zingers, like, "Your little hobo friend will not annoy us any longer." Personally though, I preferred his henchmen, who were fans of Sting and wanted nothing more than to be reimbursed for job-related expenses.
I suppose we needed this sort of bridging episode, because it brought us almost back to square one. We've already seen them break into Mick Jagger's apartment, and things did seem to be going too smoothly. Now they not only need a whole new plan, but they need to beat Enrico to the punch, or nothing will be left to steal. It wasn't all a wash though. We did get the answer to one burning question: Why are the infamous T-shirts orange? "Because it's cool." And you know what? It totally is.
As much as I enjoy all of the guest stars this show has, the power lies in the ensemble, and the focus on one person takes too much away from that. Yes, last week was centered around Gary, but they had to deal with that situation as a group. This week was almost all Eugene and Esperanza, and I missed the others. That may be why the final scene and the club scene were the strongest. The penultimate exchange pretty much summed up the episode.
- "No need to thank us, it's what we do. We're knights."
- "What about the 'of prosperity' part?"
- "We'll figure it out."
You'd better figure it out, because I've come to expect more from you.
¡Vaya con dios!
