The Monday Playlist: Mel Brooks on Masters, Finales (Rectify, Bates Motel), Motive

Freddie Highmore, Vera Farmiga

At 86, Mel Brooks is still the life of the party, a consummate ham and peerless joke-spinning storyteller. "I've come to stop the show," announces the irrepressible comic dynamo as he does just that, breaking into song mid-interview and reinforcing why PBS' American Masters titled its latest must-see career profile Mel Brooks: Make a Noise (Monday, check tvguide.com listings). His brilliant career in TV (Your Show of Shows, Get Smart), the movies and Broadway makes him an overdue American Masters subject, and his unflagging comic energy keeps everyone amused — including an intrusively visible camera crew. "I'm head over heels in love with myself," Brooks says, only half-joking. read more

How I Met Your Mother Bosses Have Big Plans for Final Year

How I Met Your Mother

When CBS announced that How I Met Your Mother would return for a ninth and final season next year, the network took the unusual extra step of proclaiming that the show's heretofore unseen "mother" would be also finally be revealed.

HIMYM co-creator Craig Thomas (who says he wasn't consulted on that part of the release) admits he was surprised that CBS felt the need to spell it out. "The plan has always been to meet this girl at some point," he says. "I think we would be forbidden from show business if we ended the series without meeting the mother, and rightfully so. They want to make sure, I guess, that the audience knows they're not going to be jerked around or short changed in any way."

Fox Boss on Disappointing Fall, Following and Britney's X Factor Future

Britney Spears

Call it a tale of two networks. Whereas NBC's chairman dwelled on the network's great past year at the TCA winter previews, Fox's Kevin Reilly was focused on the future. "We here at Fox sort of limped our way in here from 2012," he said. "Nobody's happier than us to turn the page and get onto a fresh year and better things to come."

Reilly said Fox struggled with airing shows consistently because of the usual interruptions (postseason baseball), as well as the presidential debates. But he also acknowledged lower ratings across the board because of the overall "vibrant" ecosystem of television.

"There is more choice, more quality, more breadth of quality," he said. "There are so many access points, so many availabilities. ... That is very good for the overall television business. read more

Fox Slashes Episode Order for The Goodwin Games

Scott Foley

Fox has reduced the order of its midseason comedy The Goodwin Games from 13 episodes to seven, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

The single-camera comedy, from How I Met Your Mother executive producers Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Chris Harris, stars Becki Newton, Scott Foley and TJ Miller as estranged siblings who reconnect when they stand to inherit a fortune after their father's death.
