The City Episode Recap: "Unexpected Roommates" Season 1, Episode 9

What was supposed to be a two-week stay at Adam and Jay's apartment has turned into four months, and Allie is still living there. It's become an issue for Jay, who certainly didn't sign up for this, but poor Allie is "stranded" and has nowhere else to go. Similarly, Nevan is still crashing on Olivia's couch and she's ready to kick him to the curb. She tells him before leaving for work that he has to start looking for a job and an apartment, but by the time she comes home it's clear he's done neither. It's time for a different family member to take on the waste of space.

At Once Upon A Tart in Soho, Adam tells Allie that Jay keeps asking if she's found a place yet. She immediately takes that as a hint he wants her out and starts going off on him about him not wanting her to be there. "All signs point in this one direction, of I don't know, space," she says. Adam tells her it's not the case and that he loves her, loves waking up next to her, can't imagine living without her, blah blah blah.

So the gang heads to Smooth's loft party, and yes, Smooth is apparently someone's name. He also has a velvet rope outside and a stripper pole. I won't ask questions. Erin and her long-distance boyfriend, Duncan, are there when her former love, JR, shows up. JR and Erin share a longing glance and that's all Duncan needs to pull her away and say, "We need to talk." He knows they're former flames and currently friendly, and has a problem with it. But instead of Erin assuaging his fears, she tells him that a part of her heart will always love JR and that the 18-year-old inside of her still does love him. Maybe not the smartest thing she could've told her current BF.

At Il Bastardo in Chelsea, Adam brings up the living situation with Jay. While Jay is expecting Adam to say Allie has started looking for a place, instead he drops the bomb that he may "want to take the next step." Jay tells him it's garbage and that the bickering between the couple has only gotten worse. Adam tells him that it has nothing to do with Allie and
he's the one who wants to ask her to move in and that, P.S., part of the reason they bicker is because they have a third wheel living with them. Bold claim, that's for sure.

The weekend comes to an end and Duncan is heading back home. He tells Erin that the JR situation threw him for a curve ball and that he "doesn't want to be a part of some love triangle." Before leaving, he tells her to get her s--t together and figure it out.

It's now New Year's and the group is ready to ring in 2009. The now-single Erin is on the prowl and tells her girls, "The best way to get over a guy is to get under another one." But instead of looking for fresh meat, Erin cries over Duncan not calling when the clock strikes 12. Meanwhile, it's Dumb and Dumber meets the East Village with Jay and Adam in their top hats. Jay tells Whitney about his talk with Adam and says, "Worst case, I'll stay with you." The look on her face is not one of excitement. But she swallows her initial reaction and tells him that he's always welcome and since he's been there so much for her, she'll be there for him.

The next day Jay tells Whitney all about his New Year's resolutions and then asks her if she's going to look after him during his short stay in her apartment. And by look after him he means cook dinner, make him tea — what's next, do his laundry? Once again her facial expression says it all but Jay seems un-phased. "I think it will be a good thing, I'm sure we'll make it work," he says. Famous last words.
