The Biggest Loser: Couples Episode Recap: "Week 1" Season 9, Episode 1

Welcome back to another season of The Biggest Loser! This time around, the teams are couples and this cycle features the largest contestants to date. The premiere kicks off in each duo's hometowns, where for the first time, the initial weigh-in will take place in front of the players' friends, family, and community. "Are you ready to take off your shirts and let your bellies hang out?" the trainers ask. I sure hope these guys are!

After the emotional weigh-ins are done, each team arrives, sporting their colors, to the ranch. Immediately, Ali tells them they'll have a challenge: Bike 26.2 miles collectively as a team. As if that didn't seem daunting enough, the last two teams to complete the task will be sent home. But the upside is that the team that wins receives immunity this week.

Green kicks butt from the get-go and ends up pulling out the victory. Blue begins to struggle, and the doctors step in when Cherita winces in pain because she doesn't want to give up. I love how her daughter, Vicky, keeps going and yells out how proud she is of her mom. Blue and Yellow are the last teams remaining after the grueling bike race and are sent off in their limos. But, of course it's not truly the end of the road for them. Jillian and Bob stop their cars to let them know that they will be coming back to the ranch in 30 days to face off against each other, with the team who loses the highest percentage of weight re-joining the group.

Back on campus, Jillian and Bob wake the teams up with a fire alarm to get them into boot camp mode. Once again, B and J will be training the contestants together. And let the butt-whooping begin. Lots of puking going on in this gym. The one stand-out is Cheryl of Team Orange. Something inside her wakes up, and Jillian gets her screaming so much so that Bob says, "Somebody wound up that mama and let her spin like a top in this gym."

After a little getting to know each other and then another brutal last-chance workout, it's time for our first official campus weigh-in. Green is safe with immunity, so they're up first. Miggy, whose starting weight was 240, loses 13 pounds, and Migdalia, with a starting weight of 265, loses 16 pounds.

Here's how the rest of the weigh-in goes down:
Team Gray: Sam (starting weight of 372) and Koli (403) lose 18 and 29 pounds for a total loss of 6.06 percent.
Team Orange: Cheryl (227) and (Daris) 346 lose 14 and 29 pounds for a total loss of 7.5 percent.
Team Black: Andrea (298) and Darrell (413) lose 14 and 30 pounds for a total of 6.19 percent.
Team Brown: James (485) and John (484) lose 23 and 23 pounds for a total of 4.75 percent.
Team Red: Melissa (233) and Lance (365) lose 19 and 21 pounds for a total of 6.69 percent.
Team Purple: Pattie (243) and Stephanie (264) lose 23 and 18 pounds for a total of 8.09 percent.
Team Pink: Ashley (374) and Sherry (218) lose 21 and 17 pounds for a total of 6.42 percent.
Team White: Maria (281) and Michael (526) lose 13 and 34 pounds for a total of 5.82 percent.

Notables: Michael, the first player ever to weigh in at over 500 pounds also loses more weight in one week than anyone in Biggest Loser history. Also, twins James and John, with a combined weight of 969 pounds, are the heaviest team ever.

The twins are up for elimination and James pleads with his fellow contestants that he can focus on himself at home and John should stay. So will their opponents vote this way or with game play in mind? After receiving five of the team's votes, James is going home to complete his journey. He has a long way to go, and I hope he can do it!
