The Biggest Loser: Couples Episode Recap: Week 16 Season 9, Episode 16

With O'Neal gone (tear), the players head back to SoCal to resume the competition. It's been 4 months, and the remaining 6 contestants have lost a whopping total of 805 pounds! So with that achievement, it's time for makeover week! I love seeing how each season's cast undergoes beatification to match their physical — and emotional —transformations.

Although this time around there's no Tim Gunn, it's still fun to watch each person put on clothes they never imagined wearing. But poor Michael still needs to shop at Big and Tall, all by himself. "Who loses 183 pounds and still can't fit into clothes?" he asks. Daris, meanwhile, lets celeb hair stylist Jonathan Anton chop off his locks, and the difference is immediate. As everyone goes to check themselves out, they're surprised by family members who have come to surprise them.

Sunshine is out first, and she looks absolutely gorgeous. She and her brothers all scream and hug when they're reunited. Next is Koli, looking spiffy with his glasses. His parents are there and give him a lei as a symbol for his accomplishment. Ashley appears next and looks like a modern day Olivia Newton-John from Grease. I love when her sisters give her a little slap on the behind. When Sam comes out, it's amazing to see how skinny he's gotten. He looks like a completely different guy. As Michael is revealed to his sister, there is so much high-pitched screaming I can't understand what they're saying, but he looks great and so much younger. After, all the players and their family sit down to watch Ashanti perform as we see a montage of them through their journey.

This week's challenge is to climb "Jacob's Ladder," with the winner receiving a one-pound advantage. Whoever falls off first gets the infamous one-pound disadvantage, and that person is Ashley after only a few minutes. Daris and Koli, meanwhile, are the last up on the ladder and hold on for more than two hours. (That's how long it took me to run a half marathon!) After two and a half hours, Daris drop,  and Koli wins.

During the last-chance workout, Jillian focuses on Ashley and her one-pound disadvantage she has coming, while Bob works with Daris on not giving up.

Here's how the weigh-in goes down:
Koli loses 15 pounds, and with 1-pound advantage, 6.18 percent.
Michael loses 9 pounds, 2.62 percent.
Daris loses 9 pounds, 4.21 percent.
Sunshine loses 9 pounds, 4.81 percent.
Sam loses 2 pounds, .83 percent.
Ashley loses 10 pounds, with 1-pound disadvantage, 3.63 percent.

So it's Michael and Sam below the yellow line. Sam talks to everyone about how he knows if he makes final four he can't win. He says he's not trying to be the Biggest Loser, but he wants to stay and his journey isn't over. Michael cries as he pleads his case, saying that the finish line is still far for him. "We all want to look like Sam; Sam did it," he says. The votes reveal that Sam is going home. He and Koli are both filled with tears as he must say goodbye. Now that he's home, though, Sam is down to 236 pounds. It's only two pounds less than when he left, but he says he's the only contestant in history to reach their goal weight on campus. And I'm so glad they detailed his relationship with fellow contestant Stephanie in his update. "I come home to my at-home prize every day," he says. Aww!

Are you sad to see Sam go?

Premise: Popular reality fare about overweight people competing to drop pounds. Divided initially into teams, the contestants are aided (and bullied) by trainers and must participate in physical reward challenges. At the end of each episode, there's a weigh-in that helps determine who is sent packing.
