Big Bang Theory Episode Recap: "The White Asparagus Triangulation" Season 2, Episode 9

This week Leonard and Stephanie get a little closer, but the only thing causing friction in this new relationship is Sheldon. Can it last or is Sheldon's interference going to make it fail?

Sheldon and Penny find themselves running into each other getting the mail. Since Sheldon is not very big on "small talk," a very awkward Sheldon asks Penny, "What is shaking?" Sheldon continues to strike up casual (yet uncomfortable) conversation with Penny as they walk back up to the apartment and eventually gets to his point. He tells her that Stephanie is very important to him because she is the only woman that he finds tolerable... the only one. He does not want her to come across as a sexual candidate for Stephanie and asks if there is any way she can "find a way to suppress her feminine libido." Penny thinks for a little... then responds, "I could think of you."

Next, we see Leonard and Stephanie having a romantic candlelight dinner (why not at an actual table?) but of course Sheldon is there with them sitting in his usual spot on the couch. "And you said there wouldn't be enough for the three of us!" Sheldon exclaims as he continues eating pasta. Leonard is visibly annoyed by Sheldon's interference, but Sheldon continue to ask Stephanie random questions... that somehow always go back to a story pertaining to him.

The second Leonard/Stephanie date was at a movie theatre. It looked like a typical date with the two of them sitting close together, sharing popcorn... but then Sheldon comes in interrupting yet again. He tells Leonard that the note he left him stating he was going to the movies was very confusing because it didn't have a movie title or a time on it. So, a little investigating on Leonard's computer led him to find the exact information he needed. He then tells both of them that he needs to find seats. A confused Stephanie tries to tell Sheldon that we already found the seats, but before she could finish that statement he was already going from seat to seat trying to find "the acoustic sweet spot." The best Sheldon moment of the episode was when he was hopping from seat to seat yelling out, "Ha!" "HOo!" NNAa!" He finally figures out that they were sitting in the sweet spot the entire time. Who else wants to do this the next time you are sitting in the theatre? I have a feeling I would either get laughter (from the other BBT fans out there) or a look of total confusion/anger.

The next scene finds a concerned Sheldon knocking on Leonard's bedroom door to let him know that Stephanie's MySpace page is set to "single" and her Facebook page consisted of her throwing a sheep at a guy named Mike. (I hate it when that happens! And yes...it does happen) Finally, I was proud of Leonard to speak up for once and let Sheldon know that he was in the relationship and not him. Next, more knocking ensued, but this time he was in front of Penny's door with a gift. "This is banana bread." Apparently offering food is a great way to start conversation and be let into an apartment. Penny lets him in and he walks in (but at first wondered if she was robbed because it was so messy) and wanted to ask her some questions about her relationship with Leonard. "I need to know what you did to pop an imaginary cap in his buttocks." (Best. Question. Ever.) A shocked Penny gives Sheldon the look of death, and was thrown out of the apartment.

The third Leonard/Stephanie date was in his living room, and it seemed like it was going to go to the next level when all the sudden strange noises were coming from the kitchen. Sheldon was in there grunting and pretending to struggle with a jar. Sheldon calls Leonard over for help and explains to him that opening up this jar of pickles will display him as more of a man in Stephanie's eyes. Leonard grabs the jar... carefully grasps the lid... and he can't seem to open it. Stephanie asks if he needs any help, which he adamantly denied and eventually broke the jar (by tapping it on the table) causing him to cut his hand and bleed. Stephanie tells Leonard that he will be needing stitches and the next thing you know he is puking in the sink. Sheldon then says, "fyi, I was defrosting a steak in there."

A couple stitches and a doctor bill later, the gang is back at the apartment. They tell Leonard that according to Facebook... he is now in a relationship. However, this is a major problem because if you state you're in a relationship too soon...it could end before it even started. Leonard was not too happy with this because Sheldon (yet again) figured out Leonard's password and changed his status for him. Luckily, Stephanie accepted this status change... making it official. Attention Facebook community, Leonard is no longer a single man!

So, am I the only one that thinks Stephanie may be too good to be true? She is very pretty, great personality, intelligent... so, what could be wrong with her? I personally think that this is a minor bump in the road and it is just leading to a Penny/Stephanie confrontation. And if you guys haven't seen it yet and want to find out about the casting of Leonard's mom, Sheldon's asexuality and his favorite geek T-shirt...be sure to check out the TVGuide.com interviews with Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons here. Also, below are some best quotes from this week.

"Suuup?" - Sheldon walking up the steps with Penny

"Have you ever witnessed a violent crime?" - Sheldon's small talk with Stephanie

Speed Of Light Leonard (SOLL) - Leonard's nickname thanks to the non-existent Leslie

"Where are you in your menstrual cycle?" - Sheldon's very inappropriate question to Penny

"I can't remember a time when you weren't talking." - Leonard in the hospital

"Dr. Sheldon Cooper... For the win!" -Sheldon's classic one-liner after Leonard and Stephanie make the relationship official.

Premise: Two nerdy physicists share an apartment and an unlikely friendship with their beautiful neighbor with whom one of them is infatuated. Like the universe after the big bang, the show's popularity expanded, thanks to breakout star Jim Parsons, along with the chemistry among the friends and the developing romance between Leonard and Penny. The addition of Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik in later seasons also enhanced the stories and relationships of the leads.
