The Bachelorette Episode Recap: Week 3 Season 8, Episode 3

We begin with Emily chatting with her mom while the men are meeting Chris in the courtyard to get the first date card of the week, which goes to Chris. Before we know it, they're walking through downtown Charlotte, hand-in-hand, until they reach a building — that they'll have to climb up. The ropes fall from the top and the harnesses come out and the two are getting ready to scale the wall. As they're climbing, the wind picks up and lighting flashes, so Emily starts to freak out. And it doesn't help there's now a crowd below. They soon reach the top, but rather than kissing her, Chris gives Emily a high-five. How, um, romantic?

At dinner, Emily admits that she'd be way too intimidated by Chris in real life to go up to him in a bar. She then asks about his last relationship, which lasted six years. Chris is only 25 and Emily (as am I) is shocked. Chris senses her hesitation and reassures her he's a man who's mature and ready to take on a family. Emily's smile grows ear to ear and she hands him the rose. Next, Chris and Emily talk to a concert where Luke Bryan is playing. They dance and Chris asks if he can kiss her. Emily's answer is perfect, "Why don't you try?" and so he does. Yay for Emily's first kiss this season!

Charlie, Alejandro, Stevie, Ryan, Alessandro, Sean, John, Michael, Doug, Jef, Tony and Travis go on the group date where they're met by a football-wielding Emily. She fetches a few of her girlfriends because now it's time for the boys — and the egg— to get grilled! When the ladies meet Travis, they want to know right away why he's carrying an egg, as any normal women should. It doesn't go to well for him after that. Stevie, again, dances, while Ryan does push-ups for them. But the ladies are really impressed by Sean (and his abs), who hasn't had too much time with Emily.

Next up, a gaggle of kids come running in. Some of the guys immediately grabbed them and started playing and swinging with them. Ryan takes some time to talk to Emily, but puts his foot in his mouth by telling her she better not get fat and lazy. Ouch. After he walks away, the ladies spill about their convos, and Sean and Doug seem to top their list.

That night, the group toasts to a great day. Emily takes Sean aside and tells him that he made a wonderful impression on her friends. They discuss why he calls himself "selective" and how his parents have set the perfect example of love for him. Next up is Doug, and Emily wants to know more about him than just the dad side of him. He explains his dad had epilepsy and married a not-so-great woman who ended up leaving him alone to raise Doug and his sister. Ultimately, Doug says his dad died and they ended up in foster care. Emily cries hearing the story. Tony, meanwhile, is having a tough time being away from his son and wondering if he should be there. He thanks Emily for the day and says he needed it, as he tears up. Emily reassures him that he's a great dad and it's definitely harder on him than it is on his son. He calls him afterwards and cries while saying goodnight to him. Emily finds him and they try to talk out, but she ends up telling him that she struggled on Brad's season and would've wanted to be sent home had she not been "the one." So she ultimately tells Tony that she can't say it's him in the end, so she would rather he go and be with his son. Emily returns to the guys and the good news is, she has a rose to hand out! It goes to Sean.

It's time for Arie and Emily's date, and they're going to Dollywood. (Fun fact: I've been there.) They have the theme park to themselves and walk around and play some games. Afterwards, they head to the indoor stage where they're tasked with writing a love song. As they're writing, Dolly sneaks up behind them and surprises Emily, who literally freaks out. Dolly starts to perform an original song for them as Arie and a still-dazed Emily dance. Afterwards, Dolly kicks Arie out for some girl chat. Dolly asks what Emily is looking for in a man and says her story is touching and she deserves true love. She ends by performing one last song for the two.

Emily and Arie go off to dinner. They discuss Arie's past relationship with a girl who had two kids and how serious it was. Arie then asks Emily about her and Brad's relationship and why it ultimately ended. Arie says he's absolutely ready for the next step and to have a family. After covering a wide range of topics, Emily tries to mess with Arie that he's not getting the rose, but it's all in good fun (well not for Arie) because he gets the rose. They take a ride on a carousel and celebrate their good date with a good 'ole makeout session.

It's cocktail party time, and Emily starts to pull the men aside one by one. First up is Kalon, but it becomes slightly tense when he basically tells Em to shut up. Next is Travis, who finally, with the help of Emily, says goodbye to Shelly, the ostrich egg. Alessandro asks Emily during their time how he'd be as a dad. He admits he doesn't have a lot of experience and adds that it would be a "compromise" for him. That does not sit well with Emily. She tells him Ricki isn't a compromise, but the biggest bonus. It ends in Emily letting him go. After she eliminates him, she talks to Arie and he (and his smooches) start to make Emily feel better.

Emily's ready to hand out her roses and they go to Jef, Charlie, Doug, Michael, Travis, Alejandro, Ryan, John, Kalon and Nate. So Stevie is going home. Next week the group goes to Bermuda and things between Emily and Arie are heating up. Plus: The guys get feisty and Ryan becomes the enemy!
