The Bachelorette Episode: "The Bachelorette"

Season 8, Episode 1
Episode Synopsis: Season 8 premiere: Emily Maynard begins her quest for love in her hometown, Charlotte, where her 25 suitors are predictably charmed by Emily. And Emily is charmed by a letter written by one man's 11-year-old son. But not all contestants charm each other (most notably, the guy who arrives by helicopter) and, not surprisingly, the opening cocktail party has its share of contention. At the rose ceremony later, Emily pares the field to 19.

The Bachelorette Episode Recap: Night 1 Season 8, Episode 1

The Bachelorette is back! It feels like it was just yesterday that we watched Ashley and J.P. find love and now it's time to join Emily as she searches for her happy ending. Will her season end in another proposal for her? Time to find out.

We re-meet Emily and hear her story about getting engaged to NASCAR driver Ricky Hendrick, who died a few months later in a plane crash. Shortly after his death, Emily found out she was pregnant and is now raising her 6-year-old daughter Ricki. Although Emily's engagement to previous Bachelor Brad Womack ended, she still believes in the process and hopes to find love again.

Let's take a break from Emily and meet some of this season's men!

Kalon, 27, from Houston, gets out of helicopter and talks about how he can wine and dine. He says he used to be a womanizer and has made a drastic change to be more responsible, but I'm not buying what he's selling just yet.

Ryan from, Augusta, Ga., is 31 and used to play pro football. He now has a sports training facility and an adorable dog.

Tony, 30, from Oregon, is a single dad to a 5-year-old son.

David, 32, is a singer/songwriter from NYC whose vocabulary reminds me of Ames.

Charlie, 32, from Nashville, explains that he fell off of a balcony and a sustained traumatic brain injury, among other things. He too has a dog and is ready to find love.

Arie is a racecar driver and knows it could bring back painful memories for Emily, but is willing to risk it.

Back at the house, Emily arrives. "This is so crazy!" she says to our lovely host Chris Harrison. She says she's very nervous and was scared to do the show because she has already lost love twice, but she has moved on from Ricky's death and ready to tackle the road ahead.

The limos arrive and here are the standouts (both good and bad):

Doug left his 11-year-old at home, and he and Emily instantly connect over their kids.

Alessandro is Brazilian and I'm pretty sure he's staring at Emily's boobs.

Stevie brings a boombox and dances along to the music.

Tony carries in a glass slipper on a pillow and sees if the shoe fits. It does.

Randy comes in dressed as an old man (or lady?) and then strips down.

Travis has a big ostrich egg and tells Emily that it's a symbol of two beautiful people — her and Ricky — and through this journey, he'll take care of the egg like he would take care of them.

Ryan strolls in and the music changes. (He's clearly a keeper.)  He wrote down a few things to say on a piece of paper. One sign reads, "You are beautiful" and the other, "I'm so nervous."

After Ryan, we hear sounds of a helicopter. No, it's not Bentley. It's Kalon, the luxury brand consultant, whom the guys immediately hate.

Emily gives the guys a pep talk, says "golly," and toasts to the start of the season and the cocktail party. Some of the more notable moments include Chris presenting Emily with bobbleheads of them (weird), Doug giving Emily the sweetest letter written by his son, Kalon stealing time away from Sean, and Arie and Emily talking about racecar driving.

Chris brings out the first impression rose, which goes to Doug. Good choice, Em!

Of course, it's already time for the rose ceremony and Emily hands out her roses to Chris, Ryan, Kalon, Arie, Charlie, Jeff, Nate, Sean, Joe, Kyle, Aaron, Alejandro, John, Alessandro, Michael, Stevie, Tony and Travis.
