The Detour requires the players to either sell four kilograms of small Italian fish in an open-air market or carry a 32-pound swordfish one-third of a mile. During the Roadblock, one team member must score a goal against a team of professional kayak-polo players.

The teams take a ride across a 300-foot zip line in Brazil to receive a clue that instructs them to fly to Moscow, where they search through thousands of Russian nesting dolls for another clue. The 10 remaining teams take a taxi ride to a São Paulo hotel where a member from each team must rappel 400 feet down the building's side. From there, it's a bus ride to Brotas, Brazil, and a Detour. Teams choose between processing raw sugar cane into juice and then ethanol or climbing a 90-foot high waterfall using ropes. The pit stop is a 19th-century coffee plantation. Eleven two-member teams meet in Denver to begin a race around the world for a $1 million first-place prize. From there, the teams fly to São Paulo, Brazil.
