Premise

Long before `American Idol,' this was the premier broadcast talent show, starting on radio as `Major Bowes' Original Amateur Hour' and airing on four TV networks in parts of four decades. The show provided early spotlights for the likes of Pat Boone and Gladys Knight (and many more lesser talents as well), offering shots at fame and scholarships to wannabe stars, and giving audiences the chance to vote for the top performers.
